OVERVIEW
The Database Administrator (L3) is the third-line escalation point and subject-matter expert for the Database Operations Tower, supporting the Oracle ExaCC environment.
The role is responsible for the Oracle virtual machines, Oracle Cluster, Grid Infrastructure, ASM, Listeners, and Container Databases (CDBs). Oracle retains responsibility for the ExaCC infrastructure and hypervisor layer, while day-to-day PDB availability, health, and session monitoring remain the responsibility of the application vendor.
The role will support PDB-related issues where a CDB or underlying infrastructure issue affects application functionality. Database performance tuning and other specialist DBA activities beyond infrastructure-level monitoring are outside the standard scope unless separately agreed in writing. Due to the specialist nature of the role, the position will also provide a significant level of after-hours and on-call coverage.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as the L3 escalation point and lead root-cause analysis for complex database Incidents and Problems, providing technical guidance and mentoring to L1/L2 engineers.
- Monitor and maintain the health of the Oracle ExaCC database environment, including virtual machines, RAC/Cluster, Grid Infrastructure, ASM, Listeners, CDBs, and related infrastructure components.
- Perform infrastructure-level monitoring, including database instance, tablespace, ASM, cluster, OCR/voting disk, replication, capacity, resource utilisation, wait events, and backup health.
- Monitor Data Guard replication and support approved disaster-recovery activities, including half-yearly DR and site-swing exercises.
- Coordinate and support database backup, restore, and recovery activities in accordance with approved backup and DR procedures.
- Perform approved CDB-level administration, including user administration, password resets, database job monitoring, and restore execution.
- Support quarterly and planned Oracle Grid Infrastructure and CDB patching, including impact assessment, implementation, post-patch validation, and rollback coordination where required.
- Coordinate Oracle and OEM service requests relating to ExaCC infrastructure, hardware, hypervisor, and product defects, recognising that execution and resolution of Oracle-owned components remain Oracle's responsibility.
- Coordinate hardware-related incidents, changes, shipments, installations, and fault monitoring with Oracle and relevant Data Center Facility Services.
- Support database-layer troubleshooting for middleware and applications where an underlying database dependency exists, while application and business-service ownership remains with the Customer and application vendor.
- Participate in operational governance activities, including Daily Operations Huddles, Weekly Service Reviews, Monthly Service Reviews, and Disaster Recovery Readiness Reviews.
- Provide on-call and after-hours support for High Severity database incidents.
REQUIREMENTS
- Expert-level Oracle Database administration experience, including Oracle RAC, CDB/PDB, Grid Infrastructure, and Exadata Cloud at Customer (ExaCC).
- Strong knowledge of ASM, Data Guard, backup and recovery, and disaster-recovery operations.
- Experience with Oracle database and Grid Infrastructure patching, including quarterly patch cycles.
- Experience monitoring and troubleshooting Oracle Cluster, ASM disk groups, Listeners, and database connectivity.
- Strong understanding of the operational boundaries between Oracle-managed infrastructure, database operations, and application/vendor-owned PDB activities.
- Experience working within formal ITSM Incident, Problem, Change Management, and Severity-based SLA processes.
- Strong ability to perform root-cause analysis, manage complex escalations, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
- Relevant certifications, such as Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) DBA or equivalent, are expected.
