Job Description

Brief Summary:
Edmund Optics Singapore is seeking an Optics Solution Engineer to deepen our technical engagement with customers across Singapore and Asia. This role goes beyond component-level support, we are looking for someone who can understand how precision optics fit within the customer's broader optical system and use that understanding to architect solutions that move from individual components toward higher-complexity assemblies.

As part of the Sales and Solutions Engineering team, this position is the technical face of Edmund Optics to our customers. You will work at the intersection of customer application requirements, optical design, and manufacturing execution. You will be partnering with Sales Engineers, Business Development, and our global manufacturing teams to deliver solutions for Life Sciences, Semiconductor, Industrial Inspection, and other advanced technology markets.

Job Description:

Customer Optical Solution Development

  • Engage directly with customers to understand their optical system requirements, application environment, and performance goals. Not just the individual component spec, but how it integrates into their instrument or device
  • Provide technical consultation on the selection and integration of flatwork optical components, advising on materials, coatings, surface quality, tolerances, and geometry based on the customer's system-level needs
  • Support customers in troubleshooting optical performance issues related to reflection, refraction, polarisation, beam deviation, stray light, or coating performance
  • Support customers throughout the full project lifecycle from initial concept discussion through specification, prototyping, and production.

Manufacturing Feasibility & Project Execution

  • Assess each custom project for manufacturing feasibility, evaluating specifications such as surface quality, flatness, parallelism, angle tolerances, and coatingbperformance against available manufacturing capabilities.
  • Select the optimal manufacturing source within Edmund Optics global facilities (Japan, Singapore, Germany) or qualified external partners based on technical capability, cost, quality, and lead time
  • Manage the project workflow from technical evaluation through quotation, supplier coordination, costing validation, and first article inspection

Engineering Drawing Management

  • Evaluate and modify customer drawings and specifications to produce manufacturable optical designs that still meet the customer's functional requirements
  • Ensure all custom part drawings carry complete and accurate dimensional, surface quality, coating, and testing specifications before release to manufacturing

Sales Engagement & Account Growth

  • Partner with the outside sales team to identify and develop high-value custom optics opportunities, participating in customer visits, technical discussions, and design reviews.
  • Identify opportunities to expand engagement within customer accounts.

Quality Resolution & RMA Handling

  • Lead technical investigation for customer technical issues.
  • Own the RMA process for optics returns. This includes coordinating root cause analysis with manufacturing teams and communicating findings and corrective actions to customers and internal stakeholders.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Photonics, Physics, Material Science or Engineering.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with precision optics, whether in manufacturing, optical design, applications engineering, or technical sales.

Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated experience working directly with customers to translate application needs into optical specifications and component or assembly solutions
  • Track record supporting technical projects which utilizes precision optics, particularly flatwork (prisms, windows, mirrors, etc).
  • Solid understanding of geometrical optics principles including reflection, refraction, polarisation, and beam propagation.
  • Understanding of optical specifications: surface quality (scratch-dig), flatness, parallelism, wedge, angular tolerances, and clear aperture
  • Working knowledge of optical materials across UV, visible, and IR ranges (fused silica, N-BK7, CaF, sapphire, ZnSe, germanium, etc.)
  • Familiarity with optical fabrication processes (grinding, polishing, centering, edging) and coating technologies (evaporation, IBS, magnetron sputtering) is advantageous.
  • Exposure to optical design or ray tracing tools (Zemax, Code V, or equivalent) is beneficial.
  • Understanding of optical metrology techniques including interferometry and spectrophotometry is preferred.
