- Sr. Silicon Photonics Design Engineer
Job Scope
We are looking for motivated talents to join our team in developing cutting-edge silicon photonics devices. The responsibilities include:
- Device Development: Design and develop high-performance passive and active silicon photonics devices (e.g., couplers, splitters, polarization splitters/rotators, MUX/DEMUX, phase shifters, photodetectors, modulators, etc.) for optical transceivers, co-packaged optics, and optical switches.
- Process Innovation: Collaborate with industrial silicon photonics foundries to co-develop innovative process flows for next-generation photonic devices.
- Device Simulation: Perform comprehensive device simulations and build numerical models to predict device performance.
- Layout Design: Create tape-out layouts for foundries and follow up to ensure timely delivery.
- Testing & Optimization: Conduct detailed optical and electrical testing, perform root cause analysis, and iteratively enhance device performance.
- Team Contribution: Play a key role in the design and development of large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
Requirements
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
- Educational Background: PhD in Electrical Engineering or related fields, with strong research experience in silicon photonics.
- Additional Expertise: Experience in quantum photonics or optical computing is a plus.
- Industry Experience: Experience with tape-out processes in photonic foundries and familiarity with photonic PDKs.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in simulation tools such as Lumerical MODE, FDTD, CHARGE, Ansys HFSS, and Silvaco.
- Programming Skills: Proficient in Python and MATLAB for modeling and data analysis.
- Communication: Strong communication skills, with fluency in English and/or Chinese.
- Team Player: Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
2. Sr. Optical Design Engineer
Key Responsibilities:
- Optical Architecture Design: Design the free-space optical path based on MEMS arrays, digital liquid crystal, etc., including the design of core components such as MLA, FAU, and lenses.
- Simulation & Tolerance Analysis: Perform simulations and evaluate system coupling efficiencies using Zemax or other optical design tools. Conduct rigorous optical tolerance analysis to provide precise alignment requirements for mechanical design and assembly processes. Design the monitoring systems integrated in a close-loop or supervised OCS architecture.
- Performance Optimization: Perform root-cause analysis from an optical physics perspective to address performance bottlenecks (e.g., IL, PDL, Crosstalk, TDL etc.) in early prototypes (V0.0/V0.1).
- Design for Manufacturability (DFM) & Scale-up: Collaborate with core optical component suppliers to align technical specifications and release rigorous optical drawings. Drive the transition of the optical engine from Proof of Concept (PoC) to mass production. Optimize tolerance budgets, and collaborate closely with the process team to ensure the design is scalable, cost-effective, and manufacturable with high yield in a volume production environment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or above in Optical Engineering, Optoelectronics, Physics, or a related field.
- Proficiency in optical design software such as Zemax or Code V; deep understanding of Gaussian beam propagation and single-mode fiber coupling.
- Proven experience in designing free-space optical communication devices (e.g., WSS, OXC, Optical Switches, Coherent Transceivers), with a strong grasp of DFM principles and cost-reduction strategies.
- Knowledge of MEMS working principles and their impact on optical path design is highly preferred.
