A metal moulder machinist creates metal parts by setting up and operating shaping, casting, and machining equipment. They produce moulds and cores, pour or inject molten metal, and use machining tools to finish workpieces according to strict blueprint specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Tool & Machine Setup: Review blueprints, schematics, and CAD/CAM files. Set up equipment such as CNC or manual mills, lathes, grinders, and moulding machines.
Moulding & Casting: Produce moulds and cores by hand or using auxiliary machines. Position patterns inside mould sections, clamp them, and pour or inject molten metal into the cavity.
Machining & Finishing: Turn, mill, drill, and shape the casted metal to exact tolerances. Smooth and polish surfaces, repairing any surface imperfections.
Quality Assurance: Use precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers) to inspect finished parts against design requirements.Equipment Maintenance: Monitor machine status, adjust speeds and feed rates, clean moulding boxes, and perform routine troubleshooting.
Core Skills & RequirementsTechnical Knowledge:
Understanding of metal properties and standard manufacturing processes (e.g., die casting, CNC machining).Physical Stamina & Dexterity: High level of manual dexterity to work with tight tolerances, and the ability to operate cranes or hoists to move heavy workpieces.Math & Computer Skills: Strong mechanical and mathematical capabilities to calculate dimensions and program CNC machines.
