Job Description

Job Purpose:

  • The Mechanical Design R&D Engineer is responsible for leading front-end development activities for low voltage switchboards within the APAC region. This role focuses on understanding customer applications in targeted segments, identifying pain points, and translating field insights into clear product requirements and solution concepts.
  • In addition to front-end engagement, the R&D Engineer manages and executes local R&D projects to deliver end-to-end technical solutions that support business growth and meet regional needs.
  • The position works closely with the regional Sales teams, the switchboard factories and HQ R&D teams to drive product innovation, evaluate new technologies, and ensure that locally developed solutions align with CHINT's global standards and strategic direction.

Major responsibilities:

  • R&D:

-- Drive product innovation initiatives to enhance performance, improve production efficiency, and optimize overall product costs.

-- Lead or participate in regional R&D and solution development projects to deliver end-to-end customer-oriented solutions tailored for the APAC market.

-- Collaborate with HQ R&D by providing systematic feedback, detailed technical assessments, and comprehensive failure analysis to support continuous product improvement.

-- Conduct field studies to observe market trends, monitor competitive offerings, and gather actionable insights that guide product development strategies and local R&D project decisions.

  • Projects/Production Execution:

-- Develop and optimize mechanical designs for LV switchboards using 2D and 3D CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CREO), driving material efficiency, standardization, and ease of manufacturing.

-- Ensure fully compliant designs in accordance with applicable standards (e.g., IEC 61439, UL 891) and internal engineering requirements.

-- Perform design verification through testing and engineering calculations to ensure a high level of product quality, reliability, and conformance.

-- Specify, select, and integrate key mechanical components, including enclosures, busbar systems, hinges, and fastening solutions, to achieve robust and practical designs.

-- Develop and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOM), detailed engineering drawings, and technical documentation to support design and production.

-- Collaborate closely with electrical engineers to ensure seamless mechanical–electrical integration and overall system performance.

-- Support production and assembly teams by resolving technical issues and driving design-for-manufacturability (DFM) improvements.

-- Engage with suppliers and procurement teams to source and qualify suitable materials and components, ensuring cost-effectiveness and reliability.

-- Lead and participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and quality checks to ensure robust product performance across the lifecycle.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS / WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on technical experience in design engineering.
  • Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CREO or equivalent).
  • Knowledge in BIM is an advantage
  • Experience in pre-fabrication solutions, electrical and cooling systems are an advantage
  • Basic knowledge in sheet metal design and manufacturing methods.
  • Understanding of LV switchgear components, busbar arrangements, and enclosure design.· Knowledge of relevant industry standards (IEC, UL, ISO).
  • Good problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in both English and Chinese is essential to liaise with our Chinese colleague / counterpart in China.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within APAC region.
