Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Marine Underwriter to join a well-established international marine insurance organisation. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing and managing marine risks, developing client relationships, and supporting the organisation's underwriting and portfolio objectives across the region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of marine insurance risks, including new business, renewals and portfolio reviews.

  • Assess vessel, shipowner and operational risks and determine appropriate terms, premiums, deductibles and conditions.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with shipowners, ship managers, brokers and clients.

  • Participate in renewal negotiations and discussions relating to pricing, coverage and policy terms.

  • Monitor portfolio performance, exposure and profitability, identifying emerging risks and opportunities.

  • Work closely with Claims, Loss Prevention, Legal and other technical teams to support effective risk management.

  • Conduct market and competitor analysis to support underwriting and business development strategies.

  • Support business development initiatives and identify opportunities to grow the regional portfolio.

  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal policies, sanctions requirements and applicable regulatory standards.

  • Provide advice to clients and brokers on coverage, terms and marine risk considerations.

  • Contribute to portfolio reviews, management reporting and strategic underwriting initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Degree or professional qualification in Marine Insurance, Maritime Studies, Law, Business, Finance or a related discipline.

  • Relevant experience in marine underwriting or marine insurance, ideally within an international insurer, broker or specialist marine organisation.

  • Strong understanding of marine insurance, liabilities and the shipping industry.

  • Good knowledge of shipowners, ship management, vessel operations and the broader maritime market.

  • Strong analytical and commercial judgement with the ability to assess complex risks.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship management skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with international stakeholders across different markets and cultures.

  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

Desirable Experience:

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:

  • Marine insurance underwriting

  • Marine renewals and new business

  • Shipowner/client relationship management

  • Marine claims or loss prevention

  • Marine broking

  • Maritime legal or technical background

  • APAC shipping markets, particularly Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan or China
