Job Description
- Proactively ensure that assigned vessels are operated safely and efficiently, in full compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards.
- Provide support across Marine Operations, including navigation, cargo operations, vetting, and advisory on health, safety, environment, quality, and certification matters in line with departmental SOPs.
- Offer maritime security guidance in coordination with the Company Security Officer.
- Support both fleet and shore-based stakeholders in adhering to internal policies and procedures.
- Conduct vessel visits, audits, and inspections as required.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS) and related processes.
- Participate in contingency drills and serve on the after-hours duty roster as an On-Call Duty Superintendent.
- Manage third-party inspections (e.g., SIRE, CDI, PSC, FSI), including follow-up actions and closure of findings.
- Coordinate and arrange external ISM, ISPS, and MLC audits in a timely manner.
- Provide operational and marine support to vessel Masters to ensure effective voyage execution and cargo operations.
- Collaborate with internal departments, including QHSE and Marine Operations, as required.
- Provide subject matter expertise to both fleet and shore teams.
- Undertake ad-hoc tasks and projects in a professional and competent manner.
- Travel offshore and overseas as needed for inspections, audits, investigations, and industry events.
Key Responsibilities & Decision-Making Authority
- Initiate and manage emergency response actions during contingency situations.
- Review and approve vessel passage plans, including calls at non-routine ports, terminals, and anchorages.
- Assess and approve risk assessments for operations involving reduced UKC or overhead clearance.
- Review and approve non-routine operations, including hot work proposals.
- Conduct performance appraisals, debrief Masters, and assess senior officers for promotion or development programs.
Mandatory:
- Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Master Mariner or Chief Engineer) or equivalent (e.g., B.Sc. in Nautical Science).
- Minimum 6 months sailing experience as a senior deck officer (Chief Officer/Master) on oil or chemical tankers.
- Experience on large tankers (VLCC or Suezmax) is highly preferred.
Desirable:
- Certification as an auditor for ISM, ISPS, and/or MLC standards.
- Experience in incident investigation.
- Prior experience in a similar shore-based role.
- Practical knowledge of ECDIS, STS operations, navigational audits, specialized tank cleaning, and ice navigation.
