Job Description: Machinery Mechanic (GEIH - Wood Operations)
The Machinery Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of machinery and equipment within GEIH Wood Operations.
This role focuses on regular machinery inspections, preventive maintenance, and timely repair works to minimize breakdowns, reduce operational downtime, and support continuous production activities, in compliance with company policies and statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Machinery Inspection & Preventive Maintenance:
- Conduct regular inspections of woodworking machinery, material handling equipment, and associated plant systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with maintenance plans, equipment manuals, and manufacturers specifications.
- Identify potential mechanical defects and implement corrective actions to prevent equipment failure and unplanned downtime.
- Maintain proper documentation of maintenance activities, inspection records, and service reports in accordance with company and audit requirements.
Breakdown & Repair Management:
- Attend promptly to machinery breakdowns and equipment malfunctions to minimise disruption to operations.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and perform repair, replacement, or adjustment of faulty components.
- Coordinate with external service providers and suppliers for specialized repairs, technical support, or procurement of spare parts when required.
- Support machinery testing, commissioning, and safe return to operation following maintenance or repair works.
Operational Support:
- Work closely with production and operations teams to ensure machinery availability and reliability in support of operational requirements.
- Provide technical support and guidance to machine operators on correct equipment usage, basic troubleshooting, and preventive care.
- Assist in identifying improvement opportunities to enhance equipment performance, reliability, and maintenance efficiency.
Health, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance:
- Comply with company HSE policies, risk assessments, and safe work procedures during all maintenance and repair activities.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and machinery are maintained in a safe and serviceable condition.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox meetings, and mandatory safety training as required.
- Report hazards, near misses, and incidents in accordance with company and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Any other ad-hoc duties assigned.
Job Requirements
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in machinery maintenance, preferably in wood processing, manufacturing, or industrial operations.
Proven experience in:
- Preventive and corrective maintenance
- Breakdown troubleshooting and repair
- Mechanical fault diagnosis and component replacement
- Experience working with maintenance schedules, checklists, and service documentation.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, equipment manuals, and maintenance procedures.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance systems and basic condition monitoring.
- Basic knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, bearings, gearboxes, belts, chains, and lubrication systems.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Good understanding of HSE requirements, risk assessments, and safe work practices in an industrial environment.
- Knowledge of machinery safety standards.
Other Requirements
- Physically fit and able to work in an industrial / factory environment.
- Willingness to commute to and fro Shipyard Crescent for work.
- Willingness to work shift schedules, overtime, or on-call duties if required.
- Ability to respond promptly to machinery breakdowns.
