Role Overview
We are hiring a Junior Linux Engineer to join a high-performance technology team within a leading hedge fund. This role is ideal for someone with solid hands-on experience in enterprise Linux environments who is looking to deepen their expertise in a fast-paced, mission-critical setting.
You will be responsible for supporting and engineering Linux-based infrastructure (primarily RHEL and Ubuntu), with a strong focus on system reliability, automation, and secure operations. Working alongside senior engineers, you will contribute to both daily operations and ongoing infrastructure improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day support and administration of Linux servers (RHEL and Ubuntu) in a production environment
- Perform core system administration tasks, including:
- User, group, and permission management
- Patch management and package updates
- System monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity planning
- Support and enhance centralized configuration and automation frameworks (e.g., Ansible)
- Build and maintain standardized system images, ensuring consistency and compliance across environments
- Implement and manage Linux system hardening and security best practices
- Configure and support cross-platform file sharing and storage, including:
- NFS for Linux environments
- SMB/CIFS integration with Windows systems
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, OS, and storage-related issues; assist with root cause analysis and incident resolution
- Support backup, recovery, and high-availability strategies
- Maintain accurate documentation, including system configurations, procedures, and runbooks
- Participate in infrastructure projects and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure adherence to security policies, change management processes, and operational standards
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree, diploma, or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in Linux system administration within a structured environment
- Strong experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and/or Ubuntu
- Practical exposure to configuration management and automation tools (e.g., Ansible)
- Solid understanding of Linux command-line operations and basic shell scripting
- Experience with network file systems and cross-platform file sharing (Linux & Windows)
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls)
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a proactive approach to problem-solving
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a team environment
Preferred / Advantageous Skills
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure (VMs, networking, storage)
- Experience with container technologies (e.g., Docker)
- Familiarity with automation, provisioning, or CI/CD pipelines
- Understanding of Linux security hardening and compliance frameworks
- Experience supporting production-critical or regulated environments (e.g., financial services, hedge funds, trading platforms)
