Job Description

A. Maintain and update the library management system (Vibrant)

  1. System maintenance: communicate with system vendor to keep the system operating well.
  2. Learn the features of the system to work efficiently
  3. Update BTS library portal e.g. announcements

B. Maintain and improve Library services, collection and facilities to support faculty and students

  1. Ensure good customer service to users, help users with enquiries.
  2. Review and improve library policies and procedures where needed.
  3. Ensure all Library operations and facilities are working well.
  4. Initiate stocktake and weeding exercises to keep collection up-to-date.


C. Acquisition (both English and Chinese books)

  1. Source for and purchase books and other resources.
  2. Prepare book lists for faculty recommendation.
  3. Review collection needs based on feedback and curriculum.
  4. Manage the Library budget.

D. Cataloging

  1. Catalogue library materials according to the Library of Congress classification system to ensure accuracy when searching the database.
  2. Follow Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR) and BTS library requirements to ensure consistency in catalog records.
  3. Make corrections for records and upkeep the Authorities.


E. Library personnel management

  1. Training and supervising Library Assistant.
  2. Recruit student assistants / Field Education students and plan schedule for students on lunch time duty
  3. Ensure student assistants are well-trained.


F. Journal (and other periodicals) subscription (both English and Chinese)

  1. Subscribe journals
  2. Renew journals
  3. Recommend journal titles to faculty

Qualifications and Requisites:

1. A Levels / recognized diploma / degree in any discipline.

2. At least 2 years of working in a library in a similar capacity or in information management, with some supervisory experience.
3. Previous experience in working in an academic library or experience in library management system and Library of Congressclassification is an advantage.

4. Verbal and written proficiency in English and Chinese (i.e. Hanyu Pinyin keyboard method) to work with materials in both languages.

5. Good computing skills: Microsoft Office Skills are essential, able to learn to use new software (e.g. MARCEdit) that helps with work.

6. Good search skills: Experience with performing searches on databases.

7. Ability to be independent, methodical, detailed and well-organised are essential.

8. Able to supervise subordinates.

9. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
