Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review and negotiate seafarer employment agreements, manning contracts, charter parties, service agreements and other commercial documents.
  • Review agreements involving vendors, principals, customers, business partners and joint-venture parties.
  • Advise Management and operational teams on contractual rights, obligations, liabilities and potential legal risks.
  • Provide guidance on the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, flag-state requirements and applicable maritime, employment and labour regulations.
  • Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments and recommend updates to contracts, internal policies and operating procedures.
  • Manage contractual disputes, crew-related claims, charter-party matters and other commercial claims.
  • Coordinate arbitration, litigation and settlement matters, including the preparation and preservation of relevant documents and evidence.
  • Liaise with external lawyers, P&I clubs, insurers, brokers and other advisers to ensure matters are handled effectively and within agreed timelines.
  • Support the review and negotiation of insurance, indemnity, liability and risk-allocation provisions.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare clear written advice, risk assessments and recommendations for Management.
  • Maintain accurate contract registers, case records, legal correspondence and compliance documentation.
  • Work closely with Crewing, Operations, Commercial, Finance and Management teams to support business activities and resolve legal issues.
  • Assist with internal compliance initiatives, contract-management procedures and legal-awareness training where required.
  • Undertake other legal, compliance and special assignments as directed by Management.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Recognized law degree and admission as a qualified lawyer in Singapore or another relevant common-law jurisdiction.
  • Three to six years of post-qualification experience gained in a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Experience in maritime, shipping, offshore, crewing or employment law would be strongly preferred.
  • Strong contract-drafting, review and negotiation capabilities.
  • Practical experience handling commercial disputes, claims, arbitration or litigation matters.
  • Familiarity with charter parties, seafarer employment agreements, manning arrangements, P&I matters or the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 would be an advantage.
  • Sound commercial judgement with the ability to identify legal risks and provide practical, business-focused solutions.
  • Strong legal research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal matters clearly.
  • Able to work independently, manage several priorities and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • General commercial or employment lawyers who have a strong interest in developing maritime expertise are also encouraged to apply.
