About the Role
This is a Legal Counsel role for a Singapore headquartered shipping company. You will be part of the team as a legal advisor for the day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance with international maritime law while safeguarding the company's commercial interests.
This role requires a lawyer who understands that legal advice must be practical, risk-aware, and ideally aligned with the operational realities of the industry.
Key Responsibilities
Legal & Commercial Advisory:
- Review, draft, and negotiate commercial shipping contracts
- Manage and provide legal support for commercial disputes
- Advise on operational legal issues, including cargo claims, collision/salvage scenarios, and crew employment matters.
Compliance & Regulatory:
- Ensure corporate compliance with Singapore-specific regulations, including the PDPA, local employment laws, etc
Strategic Support:
- Act as the bridge between the legal department, commercial operations, and technical teams.
- Manage relationships with external counsel (domestic and overseas) to ensure cost-effective and high-quality representation.
The Ideal Candidate
- Qualification: LLB and admitted to the Singapore, UK or Australian Bar
- Experience: Minimum 5 years PQE, with a strong preference for experience gained within a maritime practice (law firm) or in-house at a shipowner/manager or P&I club.
- Soft Skills: Pragmatic and commercially minded with ability to manage stakeholders
