Get to Know the Role

As a Legal Counsel, you will be an integral member of our small but efficient in-house legal team, reporting directly to the General Counsel. In this role, you will take ownership of a broad spectrum of legal matters supporting HOYA Electronics Singapore's commercial operations and corporate functions. You will work with autonomy and confidence on day-to-day legal work while contributing to strategic legal initiatives. Beyond Singapore, you will engage in cross-border matters spanning Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, and the United States, working closely with the General Counsel and regional counterparts to deliver practical, business-focused legal solutions.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, including procurement agreements, customer contracts, and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Advise on regional employment law matters, including employment contracts, workplace policies, and employee relations issues in compliance with Singapore and Malaysia's Employment Act and related legislation.
  • Support compliance programmes and initiatives, ensuring adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies across the Company's operations.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders across functions to provide timely, pragmatic legal advice on operational and strategic matters.
  • Manage and coordinate external legal counsel on matters requiring specialist expertise or multi-jurisdictional support.
  • Assist in cross-border legal matters involving Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, and the United States, in collaboration with the General Counsel and regional counterparts.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of legal templates, standard operating procedures, and risk management frameworks within the legal team.

Skills and Competencies Profile

Required Qualifications

  • Law degree from a recognised university; admitted to practise in Singapore or any other recognised jurisdiction.
  • Minimum 7 years of post-qualification experience (PQE), with a preference for candidates who have experience in both private practice and an in-house legal function.
  • Foreign-qualified lawyers with relevant commercial experience are welcome to apply.

Technical Skills

  • Strong experience in commercial contract drafting and negotiation, including supplier and customer-facing agreements is a must.
  • Working knowledge of Singapore employment law and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Exposure to cross-border transactions or multi-jurisdictional matters is advantageous.
  • Experience in the high-tech hardware manufacturing sector and / or export control regulations is preferable but not required.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in Japanese is an added advantage.
  • Commercially minded, with the ability to provide practical and business-focused legal advice.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgement, and meet deadlines.
  • Adaptable and proactive, with a professional approach to problem-solving and stakeholder management.

Travel Requirement

  • Minimal (<10%)
  • Occasional regional travel (1-2x per quarter)
