What's the role

We are seeking a skilled, proactive, and experienced in-house employment lawyer to join our legal team. You will play a crucial role leading a variety of employment-related legal matters and general contentious matters, ensuring our policies and practices are in line with current laws and regulations. You will provide expert legal counsel on all employment law matters, advising senior management, HR, and other departments on legal issues related to employee relations, compliance, disputes, and risk mitigation.

We'll trust you to:

  • Employment Law Counseling: Provide day-to-day legal advice on a wide range of employment matters across APAC jurisdictions, including employee relations, investigations, performance management, reasonable accommodations, leave management, restrictive covenants, wage and overtime issues, and other workplace policies.
  • Dispute and Litigation Management: Manage employment-related and other disputes and litigation, including discrimination and harassment claims, wage and overtime claims, libel claims and other legal actions. Oversee and coordinate with external counsel as needed.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with applicable employment laws, and regulations across APAC. Advise the organization on changes to laws and regulations impacting the workplace.
  • Regulatory Matters: Draft responses to employment-related requests for information, audits, complaints or claims filed with relevant government authorities and tribunals (eg. Ministry of Manpower (Singapore),
  • Policy Development & Review: Review, draft, and implement employment policies and procedures that promote a positive and compliant work environment.
  • Training & Education: Design and deliver training programs to employees and management on various employment law topics.
  • Risk Mitigation: Identify and assess potential legal risks related to employment practices and develop strategies to minimize risk and exposure.
  • Contract Review: Draft, review, and negotiate employment-related agreements, including offer letters and employment contracts, separation agreements, responses to requests for flexible work and medical accommodations, and other employment-related documents.
  • Employee Investigations: Working closely with our Employee Relations team in HR, advise on internal investigations related to workplace misconduct, discrimination, harassment, or other sensitive issues, ensuring that investigations are thorough and unbiased.

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent from an accredited law school.
  • Qualification to practice law and in good standing.
  • 5+ years of experience practicing employment law, with a strong background in managing complex legal issues.
  • Solid knowledge of APAC employment laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Employment Act (Singapore), Employment Ordinance (Hong Kong), Labour Standards Act (LSA) and Labour Contract Act (LCA) (Japan), Fair Work Act (Australia), and jurisdiction-specific anti-discrimination laws.
  • Experience with both contentious and non-contentious employment matters, including litigation management and dispute resolution.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with HR, senior management, and other stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to navigate sensitive and confidential matters.
  • A proactive, self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, international environment.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to handle complex legal matters diplomatically.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organisation

We'd love to see:

  • Experience advising on multi-jurisdictional employment matters across APAC.
  • Experience in representing corporates in employment-related dispute resolution proceedings and mediation forums, including the Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM) and Employment Claims Tribunal (ECT) in Singapore, the Fair Work Commission (Australia) and the Labour Tribunal (Hong Kong).
  • Experience in a variety of other dispute resolution and litigation matters.
  • Experience in a large corporate environment.
  • Familiarity with global employment laws and cross-border legal matters.
