POSITION OVERVIEW

The Legal and Compliance Manager will provide legal compliance support in the Asia region to the Regional Compliance Officer and Asia Regional Counsel of a global insurance, investment and travel assistance organization with a focus on supporting the legal compliance program. In this role, the individual will support the local Asia business region and collaborate closely with the Asia Regional Counsel, Starr Insurance group home office legal department, the Global Compliance Director, and with colleagues in the organization's international locations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Regional Compliance Officer and Asia Regional Counsel on all legal compliance matters including legal review of contracts and other documents, OFAC, FCPA, AML, Cyber-Security and Privacy in relation to all members of Starr entities in Asia (excluding Japan).
  • Attend to legal matters and enquiries, including advising, vetting and drafting of legal agreements in relation to company's business transactions, sales and distribution models and product development
  • Identify legal and compliance risks and issues and make recommendation on mediation and action items.
  • Manage external lawyers to initiate lawsuits or to formulate a defense, to gather evidence in legal proceedings involving the Company and rendering general advice relating to any legal proceedings involving the Company
  • Support the enforcement of compliance with local laws, rules and regulations in areas/countries where Starr entities have an operation.
  • Manage regulatory compliance updates to the business units by researching and staying abreast of changing insurance laws.
  • Review OFAC exception requests and escalations from other business units and corporate functions.
  • Assist in the drafting and promulgation of local rules and policies.
  • Assist in the enforcement of company rules and policies.
  • Support local training and employee engagement opportunities.
  • Assist in managing regulatory investigations, regulatory inquiries, and consumer complaints.
  • Assist in conducting compliance reviews and audits.
  • Support escalation and remediation of data loss prevention exception reports.
  • Other duties which support these businesses and functions as assigned by the Regional Compliance Officer and Asia Regional Counsel

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tertiary education in Law; preferably passed the Bar examination
  • Minimum 6-8 years working experience in the non-life insurance industry, either as in-house counsel of an insurer or with insurance practice experience in a law firm.
  • Professional insurance qualification is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required in order to communicate with overseas branch offices, regional offices and Home Office in the U.S.A.
  • Familiarity with some or all of the following regulatory requirements: AML, OFAC, FCPA, Privacy, Data Security and Record Retention requirements.
  • Ability to gain credibility and develop strong working relationships with business partners, as well as excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and negotiation skills are critical to success.
  • Detail oriented, and extremely organized.
  • Knowledge of Outlook, and Microsoft Word and Excel, is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to discretely handle highly sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally under time deadlines and pressures.
