Job Description

To support the day-to-day technical operations of the Electrical Machines & Drives Laboratory (EMDL), ensuring safe and efficient running of high-power electrical equipment, facilitating undergraduate and postgraduate teaching laboratory sessions, and providing administrative and procurement support for lab resources and personnel.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • High-Power Equipment Operation & Maintenance—Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain three-phase high-power electrical equipment and motor drive systems, including variable frequency drives (VFDs), power converters, and associated instrumentation. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and coordinate external servicing where required.
  • Equipment Procurement, Asset Management & Write-Off—Manage the full lifecycle of laboratory equipment: prepare purchase requisitions, liaise with vendors, track assets in the university inventory system, and process equipment write-off or disposal in accordance with NUS policies.
  • Financial Administration (Staff & Student Reimbursements)—Process claims and reimbursements for research staff and students (e.g., travel, consumables, conference expenses) through the university financial system, ensuring compliance with grant and departmental financial guidelines.
  • Teaching Laboratory Preparation—Prepare, set up, and check experimental rigs for undergraduate and postgraduate laboratory sessions; develop and update lab manuals, experiment guides, and safety briefing materials in coordination with the module coordinator.
  • Laboratory Safety & Regulatory Compliance—Serve as the primary lab safety coordinator: conduct regular safety inspections, maintain safety records, coordinate with NUS EHS (Environmental Health & Safety), ensure compliance with high-voltage and electrical safety regulations, and train new users on lab safety protocols.
  • Inventory & Consumables Management—Monitor and maintain stocks of components, consumables, and tools; raise purchase orders to replenish stocks in a timely manner.
  • Lab Access & User Administration—Manage lab access accounts, maintain logbooks, induct new users, and support visiting researchers and industrial partners during lab demonstrations or experiments.

Qualifications

  • Education: Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, alor a closely related discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in an electrical engineering laboratory environment or similar, with experience in operating three-phase power equipment.
  • Preferred Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining three-phase power equipment, motor drives, and power converters.
  • Familiarity with electrical safety standards (e.g., SS 638, IEC 60364, or equivalent) and high-voltage safety practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, circuit diagrams, and equipment manuals.
  • Experience with test & measurement instruments (power supplies, oscilloscopes, power analysers, LCR meters, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of laboratory management systems and university procurement/financial systems is an advantage.
  • Personal Attributes: Meticulous, safety-conscious, willing to learn, proactive, and able to work independently as well as in a team; good communication skills for liaising with students, staff, and vendors.
