Job Description

Our client is an established international organization within the maritime industry. They are seeking a Legal Counsel to join their in-house legal team and provide legal support across commercial, operational, regulatory, and dispute-related matters within the business.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and support on a broad range of maritime, shipping, commercial, and corporate matters.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on commercial agreements, including charter parties, service agreements, procurement contracts, agency agreements, NDAs, and other operational contracts.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on legal risks arising from shipping operations, vessel management, cargo transportation, logistics, and related maritime activities.
  • Support the business in managing disputes, claims, arbitrations, and litigation matters, working closely with external counsel where required.
  • Provide guidance on regulatory and compliance matters, including sanctions, trade compliance, anti-bribery and corruption, competition law, and relevant maritime regulations.
  • Assist with incident response and risk management matters involving cargo claims, vessel incidents, contractual disputes, and insurance-related issues.
  • Support corporate governance activities, including reviewing internal policies, procedures, and legal documentation.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting the maritime industry and provide practical recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions, memoranda, and risk assessments to support business decision-making.
  • Collaborate closely with commercial, operations, finance, insurance, and management teams to facilitate business objectives while mitigating legal exposure.

Requirements:

  • Qualified lawyer with at least 3 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
  • Prior experience gained from a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department.
  • Strong background in maritime, shipping, admiralty, transportation, or related commercial law matters.
  • Experience reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts within the shipping, logistics, offshore, marine, or transportation sectors.
  • Familiarity with charter parties, bills of lading, maritime claims, marine insurance, and shipping-related disputes will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of international trade, sanctions, and regulatory compliance matters is preferred.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
  • Commercially minded with the ability to provide practical and business-oriented legal advice.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
