Job Overview
The Junior Automation & Business Intelligence Developer is responsible for building practical data, reporting, and automation solutions that simplify work processes, strengthen decision-making, and support operational transformation across Howden Singapore.
This includes developing and maintaining Power BI dashboards, operational reports, and KPI solutions; designing workflow automations using Microsoft Power Automate and Microsoft 365; creating Excel-based tools and process automations with VBA; delivering operational solutions through Power Apps and SharePoint; ensuring data quality through cleansing, transformation, validation, and continuous improvement initiatives; supporting and enhancing existing reporting and automation systems; and exploring emerging use cases involving Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, and the responsible application of generative AI to drive business efficiency and innovation.
YOUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Business intelligence and reporting
- Develop, enhance and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports that translate business requirements into clear, actionable insights.
- Build reliable data models and create calculations using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX).
- Use Power Query and the M language to connect, cleanse, transform and combine data from multiple sources.
- Define and implement operational metrics, key performance indicators and management reporting views.
- Apply sound data visualisation principles to produce intuitive, accessible and decision-ready reports.
- Validate outputs, investigate discrepancies and maintain appropriate documentation for calculations and data sources.
- Publish and maintain reports within the Power BI Service, including refresh schedules, access and deployment support.
Automation and Power Platform delivery
- Design, build, test and maintain cloud flows using Microsoft Power Automate.
- Automate repetitive activities across Microsoft Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams and other approved business applications.
- Develop and maintain Excel tools, macros and process automations using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
- Support the development and enhancement of Microsoft Power Apps and SharePoint-based solutions.
- Assess whether Power BI, Power Automate, Power Apps, VBA or another approved approach is the most appropriate solution for a business need.
- Monitor solution performance, troubleshoot failures and implement sustainable fixes.
Project delivery and business engagement
- Deliver assigned small-to-medium projects independently, from requirements clarification through build, testing, deployment and handover.
- Collaborate with the other developer and relevant partners on larger or technically complex initiatives.
- Participate in business discovery sessions and translate operational needs into clear functional and technical requirements.
- Provide realistic effort estimates, flag delivery risks early and maintain transparent progress updates.
- Prepare test scenarios and support system integration testing and user acceptance testing.
- Create clear technical documentation, user guides, process maps and support materials.
- Support solution adoption through demonstrations, training and post-implementation assistance.
- Manage multiple concurrent assignments within the prioritised project pipeline.
Data quality, governance and controls
- Perform data profiling, cleansing, reconciliation and validation to improve the reliability of reporting and automation outputs.
- Apply appropriate access controls, documentation, version management and change controls.
- Handle business and personal data responsibly and follow applicable information security, privacy and organisational requirements.
- Promote reusable components, consistent development standards and controlled deployment practices.
- Identify opportunities to simplify and standardise processes before automating them.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential technical capabilities
- Microsoft Power BI Desktop, including data modelling, report development and data visualisation.
- Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) for calculated columns, measures and analytical logic.
- Power Query and M language for data connection, cleansing and transformation.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel, including formulas, lookup functions, PivotTables and structured data handling.
- Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and Excel macros for business process automation.
- Microsoft Power Automate for workflow, notification, approval and file-processing solutions.
- Working knowledge of SharePoint Online, including lists, document libraries, metadata and permissions.
- Strong understanding of data accuracy, validation and troubleshooting.
Preferred capabilities
- Microsoft Power Apps, including canvas apps and SharePoint-integrated forms.
- Structured Query Language (SQL) for querying and combining relational data.
- Power BI Service administration concepts, including workspaces, refresh, gateways and row-level security.
- Microsoft Fabric, Dataverse, Copilot Studio, Python, APIs or other integration technologies.
- Exposure to generative AI, intelligent document processing or automation platforms.
- Awareness of data governance, privacy, information security and controlled change practices.
Experience and qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Business Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Engineering or a related discipline.
- Typically one to three years of relevant experience in business intelligence, reporting, data analytics, process automation or Power Platform development.
- Fresh graduates with strong internships, academic projects or a demonstrable portfolio in Power BI, Power Platform, VBA or data analytics are encouraged to apply.
- Experience gathering requirements and working with non-technical business users is advantageous.
- Experience delivering a solution through testing, deployment and post-launch support is advantageous.
