This internship project builds upon previous work, offering a hands-on experience in IT infrastructure monitoring, data analysis, and process optimization. The intern will continue to work closely with our IT vendor and internal teams, focusing on assisting with the ongoing collection of monitoring information and critically evaluating and streamlining the flow of this information from vendors. This role aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our monitoring processes, ensuring timely and accurate insights. An optional component of the project includes documenting the reference FMO architecture of infrastructure services and linking it to what is monitored.
1. Vendor Collaboration and Information Streamlining
Objective: Collaborate with vendors to optimize the collection and flow of monitoring information, identifying opportunities for efficiency.
Tasks:
- Review existing communication channels and data transfer methods with vendors for monitoring information.
- Propose and assist in implementing improvements for more efficient and automated data collection from vendor tools.
- Document streamlined processes and best practices for vendor information exchange.
2. Monitoring Data Collection and Configuration Optimization
Objective: Assist in the ongoing collection of monitoring data and optimize tool configurations for improved data quality and accessibility.
Tasks:
- Support the regular collection and organization of monitoring data from various tools and sources.
- Review and suggest improvements to monitoring tool configurations to enhance data relevance, reduce redundancy, and ensure data integrity.
- Ensure proper storage, accessibility, and version control of collected monitoring data and configurations.
3. Data Analysis and Trend Identification
Objective: Analyze the data collected from the monitoring tools to interpret performance, identify potential issues, and assess the impact of streamlining efforts.
Tasks:
- Collect and organize data from the monitoring tools, including data gathered through streamlined processes.
- Use analytical methods to interpret the data, identify trends, anomalies, and potential issues within the IT infrastructure.
4. Optional: Performance Reporting and Insights
Objective: Create regular reports on IT infrastructure performance and provide insights based on the data analysis, highlighting improvements from streamlining.
Tasks:
- Generate regular performance reports, incorporating data from optimized collection methods.
- Provide actionable insights and recommendations based on the analysis, including suggestions for further process improvements.
5. Optional: Reference Architecture and Monitoring Alignment
Objective: Identify the reference architecture of various IT platforms and link them to the expected monitoring reports.
Tasks:
- Work with internal teams and vendors to identify and document the reference architectures of key IT platforms (e.g., application stacks, network segments, database clusters).
- Analyze how the current monitoring tools and reports align with the critical components and dependencies within these architectures.
- Propose adjustments to monitoring configurations or reporting to ensure comprehensive coverage based on architectural insights.
QUALIFICATIONS
Technical Skills
- Basic Understanding of IT Infrastructure: Knowledge of servers, networks, databases, and applications.
- Familiarity with operating systems (Windows and Linux).
- Basic knowledge of common IT monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Splunk, etc.) is a plus.
- Basic skills in data analysis and interpretation.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, etc.).
- Foundational understanding of IT architecture concepts and components is a plus.
Soft Skills
- Analytical Thinking: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret data, identify trends, pinpoint process inefficiencies, and understand architectural dependencies.
- Communication Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with vendors and internal teams, documenting findings, and creating clear, concise reports.
- Attention to Detail: Keen attention to detail for accurate data analysis, report generation, and process documentation.
