Job Description

Job purpose:

We are seeking a proactive and commercially minded In-House Legal Counsel to support our Southeast Asia operations. The role provides legal guidance on corporate governance, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, employment law, and dispute resolution across multiple jurisdictions.

The Counsel ensures all contracts and business activities comply with internal processes, corporate governance, risk management, anti-bribery, data protection, employment, and relevant industry regulations in SEA and exercise its role in cooperation with Corporate Legal and Compliance in the German headquarter and with inhouse legal departments in other international subsidiaries of the Phoenix Contact Group.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and support to business units across SEA on commercial, corporate, and regulatory matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts including vendor agreements, partnership contracts, NDAs, and service-level agreements.
  • Establish legal operational framework and compliance processes to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations in SEA countries (e.g., Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Myanmar).
  • Oversee and take responsibility for compliance matters across Southeast Asia, ensuring all business activities and contracts adhere to internal processes, corporate governance, risk management, anti-bribery, data protection, employment, and relevant industry regulations.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on compliance issues to the local compliance manager/Finance Manager/General Manager), supporting them in evaluating and addressing compliance risks.
  • Advise on general legal matters, including employment contracts, terminations, and workplace policies.
  • Manage external counsel relationships and legal budgets.
  • Assist in dispute resolution, litigation management, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and implement internal legal policies, templates, and training programs.
  • Monitor legal developments and regulatory changes across SEA and assess their impact on the business.
  • Liaising, adhere and implement corporate legal standard in regional countries.

Requirements and skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Law (LL.B. or LL.M.); Admission to legal practice in the candidate's local jurisdiction, preferably within a UK or Commonwealth legal framework.
  • Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience, ideally with a mix of law firm and in-house experience.
  • Strong understanding of legal systems and regulatory environments across SEA.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities across jurisdictions.
  • Business fluency in English; proficiency in other SEA languages is a plus.
