The British Council Singapore is currently seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated teacher to join our team on a part-time, hourly paid basis. We welcome applicants who demonstrate strong professional teaching skills, a commitment to continuous learning and development, and a positive, collaborative approach to teamwork. The role may involve teaching a range of courses including one-to-one lessons for young learners and adults, enrichment programmes for pre-school, primary and secondary students, English as a Foreign Language holiday camps for international students aged four to sixteen, Business English and General English for adults, as well as IELTS preparation classes. Experience in any of these areas, together with flexibility to teach on weekends and weekday evenings, is highly desirable.

Applicants must already be residing in Singapore and hold the legal right to take up additional employment.

The purpose of the role is to ensure the delivery of high-quality teaching that supports effective learning for all students, to uphold and strengthen the reputation of the British Council, and to contribute to the broader aims of the organisation and its cultural relations mission.

Role Accountabilities

In this role you will be responsible for delivering a wide range of lessons to individuals as well as groups of up to 18 students. You will adapt teaching materials to meet learner needs and incorporate the use of technology into lessons whenever appropriate to support effective learning. The position also requires the timely completion of registers and other administrative tasks.

A key part of the role is contributing to the British Council's global English strategy by providing professional, highquality teaching. You will play an active role in enhancing the organisation's reputation as a world authority in English language teaching through your commitment to ongoing professional development and the sharing of best practices with colleagues. Engagement in professional learning activities is an essential component of the position.

Essentials

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Undergraduate/University degree.
  • A Certificate in Cambridge Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA); or an equivalent EFL teaching qualification; or a PGCE/PGDE with a practical component (QTS); or a B.Ed in Primary, Secondary, or Early Childhood Education; or a Diploma in Education from the Singapore Ministry of Education.
  • A minimum of 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience teaching Young Learners.
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level or IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module.

Desirables

  • Recognised diploma in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) i.e. Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA).
  • PGCE/B.Ed in Primary/Secondary relevant subject.
  • Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners (CELTYL) or Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC).
  • Specialist experience teaching Early Years, Primary and Secondary Young Learners.
  • Familiarity with the Singaporean education system.
  • Experience of teaching adults, Business English experience.
  • IELTS preparation experience.
  • Experience teaching one to one or small groups.

Important Information

  • Location: Singapore - Napier Road Centre. Teachers may be expected to work in more than one British Council centre. They are also likely to work in more than one location, e.g. British Council centre and a partner institution.
  • Salary:
    • 68.00 SGD /hour for teachers with a CELTA or equivalent.
    • 80.00 SGD/hour for teachers with a DELTA or equivalent.
  • Contracted hours per week: Up to 20 hours per week.
  • Working Hours: Weekdays mornings and afteernoons; weekend mornings.
  • Local restriction on employment: The suitable candidate must already be in Singapore and have the legal right to take up additional employment.
  • Contract type: 2 years Fixed-Term contract renewable.
  • Start date: 01/06/2026.
  • Additional information: Throughout the year, there may be the opportunity for regular hourly paid work on a range of different products according to demand. Once the teacher accepts a class, the expectation is that they will be available for the entire course until the end of that course.
