Job Description

Overview

The HealthShare Architect is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining the strategic vision, architectural direction, and governance framework for the organization's Health Information Exchange (HIE) and interoperability ecosystem. Leveraging InterSystems HealthShare and IRIS for Health, this role ensures that the platform is scalable, secure, high-performing, and fully compliant with healthcare regulatory requirements such as HIPAA and emerging FHIR mandates. The Architect aligns interoperability initiatives with enterprise IT strategies while providing technical direction to teams and stakeholders across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Architectural Design

  • Define the long-term technical roadmap and target-state architecture for the InterSystems HealthShare platform, including deployment models (on-premises, cloud, hybrid) and modern integration patterns.
  • Architect and drive the implementation of large-scale, mission-critical clinical data integrations and workflows using IRIS for Health/HealthConnect with emphasis on performance, resilience, and high availability.
  • Serve as the highest-level subject matter expert for HealthShare components, including Unified Care Record (UCR), Clinical Viewer, EMPI, and Care Management modules.
  • Ensure the HIE architecture enables advanced capabilities such as population health analytics and AI/ML by harmonizing data within the SDA data model.

Technical Governance & Standards

  • Define and enforce architectural, development, configuration, and security standards across all HealthShare-related integrations and custom solutions.
  • Provide expert guidance to development teams on best practices for ObjectScript, DTL, XSLT, and BPL within InterSystems Interoperability Productions.
  • Lead the modernization strategy for interoperability standards (e.g., HL7 FHIR), ensuring readiness for regulatory updates and industry evolution.
  • Oversee platform security, including authentication/authorization models, consent management, and data masking/filtering to ensure compliance with privacy and security frameworks.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide mentorship, technical leadership, and oversight to HealthShare developers, analysts, and integration engineers; conduct regular code and design reviews.
  • Partner with business analysts, clinical stakeholders, and enterprise architects to translate complex clinical and operational requirements into robust technical designs.
  • Contribute technical input for scoping, estimation, resource planning, and risk assessment across all HIE and interoperability initiatives.
  • Act as a senior escalation and coordination point between application teams, infrastructure teams, and external HIE or vendor partners, particularly during complex deployment or troubleshooting events.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in Healthcare IT, with a minimum of 5 years focused on architecting solutions using InterSystems HealthShare, Ensemble, or Cach.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in the InterSystems technology stack: HealthShare, IRIS for Health/HealthConnect, ObjectScript, and core database technologies.
  • Mastery of healthcare interoperability standards including HL7 v2.x, CDA/CCDA, IHE profiles, and advanced FHIR implementation methodologies.
  • Proven track record designing, optimizing, and supporting large-scale, high-volume integration productions in critical clinical environments.
  • Strong knowledge of database design, data modeling, and InterSystems storage structures (Globals, indexing, performance tuning).
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and deploying solutions on major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills with ability to interface effectively with executives, clinical leaders, and engineering teams.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • InterSystems Certified HealthShare or IRIS Architect (or equivalent advanced certifications).
  • Experience integrating HealthShare with leading EHR platforms such as Epic or Cerner.
  • Familiarity with analytics platforms and reporting tools leveraging HealthShare data (DeepSee, Health Insight).
  • Experience implementing DevOps practices for InterSystems solutions, including Git-based version control, CI/CD pipelines, and automated deployments.
