Role Description
A General Manager is responsible for running a business unit, division, country operation, or functional organization with full accountability for performance, operations, and profitability. This role sits between executive leadership (CEO/MD) and functional heads, ensuring strategy is executed effectively on the ground.
In many companies, the GM is the top leader for a country, region, or standalone business unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading overall business operations and ensuring profit & loss (P&L) performance
- Executing corporate strategy and translating it into operational plans
- Managing cross-functional teams (sales, operations, finance, HR, etc.)
- Driving revenue growth, market expansion, and customer satisfaction
- Overseeing budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance
- Improving operational efficiency, productivity, and cost control
- Managing key clients, partners, and strategic stakeholders
- Ensuring compliance with company policies, governance, and regulations
- Leading talent development, organizational structure, and culture
- Reporting business performance to CEO, board, or regional leadership
Qualifications (Must-have)
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business, Management, Finance, Engineering, or related field
- 8–15+ years of progressive leadership experience in operations, sales, or business management
- Strong experience in P&L ownership or business unit leadership
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams
- Strong commercial acumen and strategic thinking
- Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
- Ability to operate in fast-paced, competitive environments
- Strong stakeholder and client management capability
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or executive leadership training
- Experience in multinational or regional leadership roles (e.g., APAC, Middle East, Europe)
- Exposure to industries such as FMCG, retail, logistics, technology, manufacturing, or services
- Experience with enterprise systems such as SAP S/4HANA or Oracle NetSuite
- Familiarity with CRM and performance tools such as Salesforce or Microsoft Power BI
- Experience in scaling businesses, turnaround management, or market expansion
- Strong exposure to board-level reporting and investor communication
- Experience in both operational and commercial leadership roles
