Job Description

Role Summary

We are looking for an HVDC Valve Engineer with proven experience in HVDC converter projects and strong technical capability in valve installation, pre-commissioning, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate has practical site experience in converter station environments and a solid understanding of valve-related mechanical and electrical interfaces.

The HVDC Valve Engineer supports the installation, testing, pre-commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of HVDC converter valve systems on international projects. The role requires hands-on HVDC project experience, strong mechanical and electrical site knowledge, and the ability to work safely and effectively in demanding high-voltage site environments.

As HVDC Valve Engineer, you will support and execute site activities related to the installation, assembly, pre-commissioning, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of HVDC converter valve systems on international projects. This role is intended for a candidate with practical experience in HVDC projects, particularly in converter station environments and valve-related site activities. You will work closely with site leads, supervisors, engineers, technicians, and subcontractors to ensure valve-related work is completed safely, with the required quality, and in line with project schedules and technical requirements. The role requires a strong mechanical engineering foundation, a good understanding of electrical testing and checks, and familiarity with key valve interfaces such as cooling systems, piping, busbar systems, pressure testing, flow testing, and site documentation.

The position involves regular travel to customer sites worldwide and requires the ability to work in demanding field conditions, including remote and offshore locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute and support site activities related to the installation, assembly, repair, maintenance, and pre-commissioning of HVDC converter valve systems.
  • Perform valve-related mechanical and electrical site work in accordance with approved procedures, technical documentation, quality standards, and EHS requirements.
  • Support the preparation and execution of project activities from work planning through completion and handover to the customer.
  • Carry out and support supervised activities including pipe fitting, mechanical assembly and installation, busbar installation and jointing, cable laying and inspection, pressure and flow testing, cooling plant and interface works, as well as electrical checks and testing.
  • Assist in troubleshooting valve-related issues identified during installation, testing, pre-commissioning, or maintenance phases.
  • Ensure correct use of tools, equipment, spare parts, and technical documentation required for field execution.
  • Contribute to progress reporting, site records, work completion documentation, and technical feedback from site activities.
  • Support quality monitoring and traceability of works by completing inspections, reports, checklists, and non-conformance documentation as required.
  • Participate in close-out activities, lessons learned capture, and documentation updates linked to valve site execution.
  • Follow and promote all EHS requirements and contribute to a strong safety culture in line with GE lifesaving principles and GE EHS policies.

Requirements:

Experience

  • Essential experience in HVDC projects, preferably in roles involving converter valve installation, pre-commissioning, maintenance, field engineering, and converter station site execution.
  • Practical experience working on mechanical and electrical activities in industrial or high-voltage environments.
  • Essential familiarity with HVDC converter valve systems and associated site interfaces
  • Experience supporting site execution, testing, and documentation activities on complex projects.
  • Essential exposure to high-voltage environments, ideally including work on HV or live HV installations.

Technical Background

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred, or equivalent technical experience, with a good understanding of general electrical engineering.
  • Strong mechanical engineering knowledge with practical field experience.
  • Good understanding of site testing activities, installation practices, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, procedures, inspection plans, and work instructions.

Skills

  • Good technical and practical problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good communication and reporting capability
  • Ability to work effectively in site teams and multicultural project environments
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality
  • Organized and able to manage assigned tasks in line with project priorities

Mobility

  • Willing and able to travel globally on a frequent basis and stay at project sites for extended periods, including remote and offshore locations when required.

Desired Characteristics

  • Direct experience with HVDC converter valves on transmission or converter station projects
  • Experience supporting pre-commissioning and testing activities
  • Familiarity with non-conformance reporting and quality follow-up
  • Involvement in continuous improvement or lessons learned activities
  • Ability to work independently on assigned technical tasks while coordinating effectively with supervisors and project teams
