Job Description

The primary job scope for professionals holding API 510, 570, 571, 580, 653, and CSWIP 3.1 certifications is to serve as a Plant Inspector, Asset Integrity Engineer, or QA/QC Inspection Engineer within the oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries. These professionals are responsible for evaluating the safety, structural integrity, and regulatory compliance of static plant equipment during construction, in-service operations, and scheduled turnarounds.

The specialized roles and responsibilities are mapped to each specific credential below.

Core Equipment Inspections (The Big Three)

These certifications authorize inspectors to perform physical compliance audits, calculate remaining equipment life, and sign off on continued operation or repair strategies.

  • API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspector): Evaluates pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and reformers. Scope includes assessing wall-thickness loss, calculating maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP), and certifying repairs or alterations.
  • API 570 (Piping Inspector): Inspects process piping systems. Scope includes executing on-stream inspections, evaluating localized corrosion or erosion, and determining if a piping circuit is fit for continued service.
  • API 653 (Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector): Inspects large atmospheric storage tanks. Scope includes evaluating tank bottoms, shells, and roofs, assessing foundation settlement, and verifying major structural repairs.

Specialized Technical Engineering

These certifications shift the scope from physical inspection to analytical engineering and predictive maintenance planning.

  • API 571 (Corrosion and Materials Professional): Diagnoses damage mechanisms affecting plant assets. Scope includes identifying risks like wet H2S damage, sulfidation, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and high-temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA).
  • API 580 (Risk-Based Inspection Professional): Develops optimized, risk-prioritized testing schedules. Scope includes assessing the probability and consequence of equipment failure to shift plants from reactive to predictive maintenance intervals

Fabrication & Welding Quality Control

This credential focuses on the upfront construction, repair verification, and structural modification phases of plant assets.

  • CSWIP 3.1 (Welding Inspector): Manages visual welding quality assurance. Scope includes checking joint alignment, monitoring welding parameters during fabrication, identifying surface defects, interpreting Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) results, and auditing welder qualifications.

Combined Day-to-Day Job Duties

When a single professional holds all these credentials (often called a Multi-Certified Plant Inspector), their day-to-day job scope involves:

  1. Turnaround & Shutdown Management: Leading fast-paced equipment status assessments during scheduled plant outages to minimize asset downtime.
  2. Defect & NDT Coordination: Directing specialized NDT technicians (UT, RT, MT, PT) to scan high-risk asset locations identified by corrosion profiles.
  3. Fitness-For-Service (FFS): Determining whether degraded equipment can safely operate until the next shutdown or if immediate repair/replacement is mandatory.
  4. Regulatory Reporting: Writing, signing, and submitting official compliance and inspection logbooks for corporate records and governmental safety audits
