The Director of Engineering at HOYA Electronics (HOES) will be a pivotal leader, steering the engineering department towards achieving critical production and development goals. This strategic role involves comprehensive oversight of engineering operations, from initial planning and capital expenditure to the qualification and release of essential engineering tools. You will be instrumental in building a high-performing engineering team and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement to meet evolving customer demands in mask blank requirements. This will enable our organization to realize our vision as the globally recognized leader and most trusted partner in photomask blanks.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Spearhead the strategic planning, budgeting, and execution of engineering projects, ensuring alignment with production shipment targets and development sample objectives. This includes managing capital expenditures (CAPEX) and the qualification and release of engineering tools.
  • Drive the achievement of departmental goals by developing clear plans, allocating resources effectively, monitoring progress rigorously, and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Lead Yield and Quality Improvement initiatives through conducting comprehensive analyses of current production performance, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing process optimization and quality control measures to enhance yield and ensure continuous production efficiency and quality improvement.
  • Cultivate and enhance the engineering competencies within the team to address the increasing complexity and demand for mask blank requirements from our customers.
  • Champion managerial effectiveness by leading recruitment, selection, onboarding, and ongoing development of engineering managers. This includes coaching, mentoring, performance management, and fostering an environment that encourages open communication, shared values, and continuous learning.
  • Establish and communicate clear strategic objectives, assign accountability across the engineering team, and develop incentive programs to drive performance and innovation.

Skills and Competencies Profile

  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Demonstrated ability to develop and implement comprehensive engineering plans, manage budgets, and measure results effectively.
  • Leadership & Team Development: Proven experience in recruiting, coaching, and developing high-performing engineering teams and managers. Ability to inspire and motivate, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Technical Acumen: Strong understanding of engineering principles and practices relevant to production and development, particularly in mask blank technology or similar precision manufacturing areas.
  • Resource Management: Expertise in allocating resources (financial, human, and technical) efficiently to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Problem Solving & Decision Making: Adept at identifying challenges, analyzing complex situations, and implementing effective solutions, including making critical mid-course corrections.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent ability to communicate values, strategies, and objectives clearly and persuasively across all levels of the organization. Capable of fostering as well as participating in an environment conducive to open dialogue and information sharing.
  • Results Orientation: A strong drive to achieve targets and deliver on commitments, focusing on continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Foundational Experiences for HOES

  • Proven track record of successfully managing engineering operations, including planning, capital expenditure, and tool qualification within a manufacturing or development environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in achieving production and development targets through effective leadership and resource allocation.
  • History of building and developing engineering talent and leadership within an organization.
  • Experience in an industry with demanding customer requirements and evolving technological landscapes, preferably related to semiconductor, optics, or precision components.
  • A background that includes significant responsibilities in budget management, performance appraisal, and strategic objective setting for an engineering function.
