Job Description

The Electrical Project Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing the execution of electrical engineering projects. They act as the technical lead, ensuring that all electrical aspects of a project (such as power distribution, lighting, control systems, or electronics integration) are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with relevant Singapore Standards & codes and client specifications. They bridge the gap between the engineering design team, procurement, construction crews, and the client.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Planning
  • Develop detailed electrical designs, schematics, and single-line diagrams using software such as AutoCAD Electrical or Revit.
  • Perform technical calculations for load flow, short circuit analysis, voltage drop, and lighting levels.
  • Select appropriate electrical equipment (transformers, switchgear, panels, cables, motors, PLCs).
  • Prepare Material Take-offs (MTO) and Bill of Quantities (BOQ).
  • Ensure designs comply with the Singapore Standards & relevant Code of Practice (SS538, SS638 etc), IEC standards, and local utility requirements.
  • Project Management & Coordination
  • Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with senior management and other project stakeholders & client.
  • Create and manage project schedules, ensuring engineering milestones are met.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines (civil, mechanical, structural) to ensure clash-free designs.
  • Liaise with vendors and suppliers to procure electrical equipment, ensuring it meets technical specifications.
  • Construction & Commissioning Support
  • Provide technical support to construction team, technician & electricians during installation.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals from contractors for accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues that arise during the construction phase.
  • Oversee testing and commissioning activities (e.g., insulation resistance testing, relay calibration, functional testing of motor controls & all respective test required for ensuring the system is compliance).
  • Ensure proper handover of as-built drawings and operation/maintenance manuals to the client.
  • Compliance & Safety
  • Conduct (RA) risk assessments & create & review (MOS) work method statement and ensure all electrical work adheres to company safety policies and OSHA standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Arc Flash study requirements and safety labeling.
  • Participate in Hazard Analysis (HAZOP) or constructability reviews.
  • Industry-Specific Variations

The exact nature of the job changes depending on the industry. Here is how the role differs:

  • In Construction/Building Services & Hospitality sectors: Focuses on lighting, High Tension & Low Tension power distribution to outlets, fire alarms, and backup generators for commercial or residential buildings.
  • In Renewable Energy: Focuses on inverter technology, battery storage systems, and grid interconnection.

Requirement

  • Bachelor's degree (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) in Electrical Engineering or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
  • 37 years of experience in electrical engineering, preferably within a specific industry such as construction, oil & gas, manufacturing, infrastructure & hospitality.
  • Proven experience managing & execution of maintenance projects from concept to completion.

Certifications (Preferred But Not Always Required)

  • LEW license or equivalent local certification.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) is a strong asset.
  • Certified Automation Professional (CAP) for controls-focused roles.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP or Revit).
  • Understanding of local Singapore Code practice & Singapore Standards or IEC standards.
  • Knowledge of motor control centers (MCC), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and PLC systems.
  • Familiarity with power systems analysis (short circuit, coordination studies).

Soft Skills

  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues under pressure.
  • Communication: Must be able to translate complex technical concepts into layman's terms for clients and translate client needs into technical instructions for the team.
  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities simultaneously.
  • Leadership: Ability to lead a technical team without necessarily having direct hierarchical authority.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office work (design, planning, meetings) and on-site work (construction sites, factories, or plants).
  • May require wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as Arc Flash suit, hard hats, steel-toed boots, and safety glasses when on-site.
  • Potential for travel depending on project locations.
