Job Description

Responsibilities

The South Asia Editor will be based in Singapore and oversee coverage of political, business, technology, economic, and social issues in Pakistan, with a particular focus on Karachi.

The successful candidate will work with a Karachi-based team that includes a correspondent, editorial assistant, and camera operator to produce content for CNA TV International, with some output also appearing on CNA's digital and radio platforms. In addition to developments in Karachi, the editor will contribute to coverage across Pakistan and the wider South Asia region.

Scope of the Role

The South Asia Editor will drive coverage of Karachi, Pakistan, and the wider South Asia region for CNA TV International, working closely with colleagues from CNA Digital and Radio.

The Role Includes

  • Providing editorial direction and feedback to the Karachi bureau team
  • Overseeing day-to-day editorial output and forward planning
  • Supporting bureau operations and, where relevant, external engagement

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Supervising Editor (International Desk) in identifying and shaping major news and current affairs coverage in Pakistan and South Asia.
  • Ensure a steady flow of original, value-added, and impactful stories from Pakistan-based correspondents that meet CNA's highest editorial standards.
  • Monitor news developments in Pakistan and the wider South Asia region, providing prompt, concise, and accurate summaries to guide editorial decisions.
  • Exercise sound editorial judgment in identifying content that will resonate with CNA's Asian and global audiences.
  • Edit standard-length (two to three minutes) and feature-length (five to 10 minutes) TV news scripts to a high standard.
  • Assemble standard-length and feature-length video packages for TV news.
  • Contribute to planning coverage of major events and guide foreign correspondents during assignments, including breaking news situations.
  • Hold regular discussions with correspondents, flagging bureau issues and training needs to senior editors.
  • Stay abreast of Pakistan-related developments regionally and globally, providing timely updates to inform coverage decisions.
  • Identify story ideas that support CNA's mission to help audiences Understand Asia, reporting global developments from Asian perspectives.
  • Build and maintain a strong network of government officials, business leaders, private-sector professionals, and analysts; collaborate with CNA's existing partners in Pakistan.
  • Support CNA's adoption of new technologies and social media tools.
  • Assist in managing bureau operations, personnel, and contractors in line with Mediacorp requirements.
  • Identify and lead editorial projects suitable for submission to regional and international media awards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of editorial experience, with TV as the preferred medium; prior experience working in Pakistan or in a Pakistan-focused role is an advantage.
  • A strong interest in news and current affairs in Pakistan and across Asia.
  • Native-level proficiency in English; fluency in Urdu is an advantage.
  • Outstanding editing and writing skills.
  • A strong and well-established network of contacts in Pakistan, including the business sector.
  • Solid understanding of geopolitical sensitivities and awareness of editorial red lines.
  • Able to work independently while also collaborating effectively across platforms, including digital and radio.
  • Prior experience using AI tools and social media platforms is a plus.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends and public holidays.
