I am seeking an electrical expert for our client, a leading data centre operator, growing quickly. They have substantial funding to build large projects. They are using state of the art technology.
You would have the career path for growth into larger roles in the organisation.
**Job Title:** Electrical Director
**Role Summary**
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Director to own the electrical design strategy for large-scale, mission-critical facilities. This role sits at the intersection of client engagement and technical execution, requiring a leader who can translate business needs into resilient power architectures while driving innovation across the project lifecycle. You will act as the key technical authority, ensuring every solution is optimized for performance, cost, and long-term operational simplicity. **This position demands deep, hands-on experience in the data centre sector, with a proven ability to deliver complex power infrastructure for hyperscale or colocation environments.**
**Core Responsibilities**
- Partner with clients during early-stage discussions to capture technical requirements, validate power load expectations, and recommend appropriate redundancy configurations (IIV), **drawing on extensive data centre domain expertise to guide decision-making.**
- Lead the creation of high-level electrical concepts and technical responses during bidding and pre-construction phases, supporting business development efforts with engineering credibility **rooted in deep knowledge of data centre critical power systems.**
- Direct the full electrical design lifecycle for data centre projects, from conceptual single-line diagrams through to detailed construction documents and as-built records, **leveraging prior experience delivering similar facilities.**
- Define and govern system architectures, including medium-voltage and low-voltage distribution networks, uninterruptible power supplies, standby generation, and power distribution units, **ensuring designs are tailored to the unique demands of data centre operations.**
- Review and challenge designs produced by external consultants and contractors, ensuring alignment with project goals, internal standards, and constructability best practices, **applying insights gained from years of data centre delivery.**
- Champion technical rigor through formal design reviews at key milestones, assessing system reliability, protection coordination, and fault tolerance **specifically within the context of mission-critical infrastructure.**
- Ensure all electrical solutions comply with relevant global and local standards, including Uptime Institute guidelines, IEC, IEEE, and regional regulatory codes, **all of which are second nature to a seasoned data centre professional.**
- Spearhead the development and continuous improvement of internal design standards, technical manuals, and quality assurance protocols **based on lessons learned from past data centre projects.**
- Explore and integrate emerging technologies such as advanced UPS topologies, modular switchgear, battery storage systems, and hybrid energy solutions to future-proof facilities, **staying ahead of trends in the data centre industry.**
- Collaborate with procurement and vendor partners to evaluate equipment selections based on technical merit, lifecycle cost, and supply chain considerations, **with a clear understanding of what works in live data centre environments.**
- Provide ongoing technical support during construction and commissioning, resolving field issues and ensuring design intent is preserved through to handover, **a task that requires intimate familiarity with data centre commissioning protocols.**
- Maintain comprehensive documentation, including technical specifications, reports, and design risk assessments, to support internal and external reporting.
**Candidate Profile**
- Holds a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; advanced degree or professional engineering accreditation is highly regarded.
- **Brings a minimum of 810 years of experience exclusively or predominantly within the data centre sector, with a focus on electrical design and design management for mission-critical facilities.**
- Demonstrates a proven track record of delivering complex power systems for data centre projects consistently exceeding 20 MW in critical IT load.
- Possesses deep technical mastery of power distribution architectures, including redundant topologies (N, N+1, 2N), UPS configurations, generator plant, and earthing systems, **all specifically within data centre applications.**
- Experienced in conducting detailed power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit analysis, and protection coordination, using tools such as ETAP or SKM PowerTools.
- Familiar with contemporary energy trends relevant to data centres, including battery energy storage, microgrid integration, and renewable power sources.
- Well-versed in applicable codes and standards, including NEC, IEC, IEEE, and local statutory requirements, **as they apply to data centre design and construction.**
- Strong communicator with the ability to influence and align stakeholders across technical and non-technical backgrounds.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multi-project environment with the flexibility to travel regionally as needed.
- Proficient in design and collaboration tools, including AutoCAD, Revit (BIM), and the Microsoft Office suite.
- Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in Japanese or other Asian languages is an advantage.
