Overview

Job Description

This role is for an experienced reporter for CNBC Asia's digital team, who is attuned to researching and writing up stories and blog posts ranging from individual stock movements to sector trends, as well as global economics and financial markets. In this role, you will cover a range of global and Asian stories centred on finance, economics and geopolitics. You should be comfortable writing up breaking news, as well as market movers, short-news analysis, and long-form features for CNBC.com under tight deadlines.

As a digital reporter, you will be an expert in producing stories using a content management system, pitchingstory ideas, reporting and writing original news stories for a fast-paced, business and financial news website.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write fast and accurate news copy for financial markets, including stocks, bonds, foreign exchange, cryptocurrencies, and macroeconomics for Asia Pacific
  • React to breaking news with the ability to quickly compose an account of the facts, and thoughtfully push a story forward with analysis and original reporting
  • Stay abreast of financial and equity markets, corporate news, and macroeconomic developments, including reading analyst reports and stock charts to pitch stories
  • Actively contribute to the daily Asia markets blog/wrap, including suggesting sharp and compelling headlines, proactively direct market coverage and updates
  • Adept at reading stock charts and financial statements
  • Pitch, report and write proprietary stories about markets, finance and economics based on news flow, original reporting and comments from CNBC television interviews
  • Directly speak with sources in investment and financial industries for ideas, analysis, information and insight; cultivate sources for exclusive stories
  • Closely monitor investment trends and stock markets in China, India, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Southeast Asia, as well as in global trade, technology and business
  • Create compelling story & copy for CNBC.com that engage CNBC's audience
  • Research financial markets and economics data for appropriate stories and content on the site

Use the site's content management system to make stories & headlines as compelling and attractive as possible, leveraging on pictures, graphics, charts and appropriate embeds and links

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong news judgment and in-depth knowledge of stock markets, business and financial news, geopolitics and economic news for Asia-Pacific
  • Prior experience and proven ability to write stories on market movers, company earnings and business/sector analysis
  • Independent worker who is able to write clean and accurate copy, while making smart decisions in a fast-paced, breaking news environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to foster good relations with colleagues, contacts and sources
  • A clear understanding of CNBC's editorial and programming priorities
  • Strong command of English
  • Familiar with data sources for research purposes
  • Ability to prioritize a wide range of tasks while operating under tight deadlines
  • Proactive self-starter who takes initiative to follow up on story ideas and search for new angles to cover broad investment themes
  • Flexible and able to work different shifts occasionally, including on weekends or public holidays, when required

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

While not essential for this role, candidates with experience or proficiency in the following attributes tend to excel in this position.

  • Three (3) or more years of experience working for a leading business news website or publication
  • Prior experience working with digital media and content management systems
  • Exhibit a readiness and adaptability to expand into other media, including TV, podcasts, digital video and charts or graphics
