Chubb Asia Pacific has operations in Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Korea, Macao SAR, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, serving commercial customers and consumers with P&C, A&H and personal lines.
The APAC Deputy General Counsel supports the APAC General Counsel in providing strategic legal advice and leadership for our general insurance businesses across the Asia-Pacific region. This role works to ensure legal and regulatory compliance, manages legal risk, and supports business objectives in a dynamic, multi-jurisdictional environment. In particular, the APAC Deputy General Counsel supports the APAC General Counsel with the management and mentoring of the APAC Legal & Compliance Team as well as being the regional lead for various strategic transactions across the region.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise on legal and regulatory matters affecting our general insurance businesses in APAC, including in relation to product development, product distribution, claims, and regulatory compliance.
- Support the APAC General Counsel with the management and mentoring of the APAC Legal & Compliance Team including, in particular, working with the APAC country legal counsels.
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including distribution, procurement and reinsurancecontracts.
- Oversee and manage litigation, disputes, and regulatory investigations.
- Monitor and interpret changes in laws and regulations impacting the insurance sector; ensuring timely communication and implementation of necessary changes.
- Develop and deliver training to business and legal teams on relevant legal and compliance topics.
- Liaise with external counsel, industry bodies and regulators as required.
- Being the regional lead for various M&A, joint ventures, and other strategic transactions across the region.
- Foster a culture of legal risk awareness and ethical conduct.
Qualifications
Experience Required:
- Qualified lawyer with at least 10 years post-qualification experience, preferably in the insurance or financial services sector.
- Significant experience in general insurance law and regulation across multiple APAC jurisdictions.
- Proven ability to manage complex legal matters and lead teams in a matrixed, multicultural environment.
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Business acumen and ability to provide pragmatic, solutions-oriented advice.
- Fluency in English; additional Asian language(s) an advantage.
