Data Scientist - Synthetic Data Generation (SDG)
About the Role
We are building Mirage, a cutting-edge product for Synthetic Data Generation (SDG). Mirage was launched in August 2024 and is currently in a growth phase, with active feature development. It is offered as a web interface, with API integration on the roadmap.
SDG is an emerging privacy technology that enables organisations to generate alternative forms of sensitive data for safe use and sharing. This role sits at the intersection of data science, applied machine learning, and software engineering, offering the opportunity to shape the next generation of privacy-preserving technologies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Model Development
- Design and conduct experiments to evaluate emerging SDG models (e.g., DDPM, ARF, Gaussian Copula).
- Investigate model limitations with different data types, sizes, or cardinalities.
- Tune hyperparameters, refine architectures, and propose new modelling strategies.
2. Feature & Product Development
- Collaborate with engineers to design product features requiring ML/DS input (e.g., imputation methods, constraint handling, preprocessing pipelines).
- Recommend and implement approaches for features like privacy metrics, imputation strategies, and multi-column constraints.
3. Diagnostics & Debugging
- Work with users and engineers to troubleshoot training failures, poor outputs, or integration challenges.
- Provide actionable fixes and translate technical findings into user-friendly explanations.
4. Documentation & Knowledge Sharing
- Write clear user-facing documentation, explaining model choices, hyperparameters, and privacy/utility metrics.
- Simplify complex technical concepts into approachable guidance for non-technical audiences.
5. Collaboration
- Partner with the SWE team (Next.js, FastAPI, AWS) to integrate ML models into production systems.
- Participate in Agile rituals, code reviews, and technical design discussions.
Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, or related fields.
- At least 2-3 years of relevant professional experience.
Core Skills
- Strong foundation in machine learning and hands-on experience in model development and experimentation.
- Proficiency in Python and ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn).
- Ability to analyse model behaviour, diagnose training issues, and improve performance through experimentation.
Applied Research
- Comfortable reading, synthesising, and translating research into practical prototypes.
Software Engineering
- Knowledge of backend development (REST APIs, FastAPI, Flask, or similar).
- Experience with cloud environments (AWS preferred).
- Ability to debug software-level issues in ML workflows.
- Familiarity with Git, CI/CD, and collaborative coding practices.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with privacy-enhancing technologies, anonymisation, SDG, or differential privacy.
- Familiarity with frontend integration workflows (Next.js/React).
- Prior experience in multidisciplinary product teams.
Mindset & Collaboration
- Curiosity and eagerness to explore new domains (esp. data privacy).
- Strong communication skills to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborative, adaptable, and comfortable in Agile environments.
