Job Description

CONSULTANT, GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS,MALAYSIA

Vriens & Partners(V&P) is the leading government affairs consulting firm in Southeast Asia. Our team comprises more than 110 full-time employees representing over ten nationalities, as well as 40 senior advisors from across the region. The firm is headquartered in Singapore, with offices in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Our clients include major multinationals across various industries, business associations and chambers of commerce, and non-governmental organizations.

As a growing advisory firm, the V&P team is looking to expand. We are seeking a consultant to join our Kuala Lumpur office. Candidates should have an interest in government affairs and relations, international politics, economics, and trade. They should be an effective coordinator, researcher, analyst, and writer, with strong communication and organizational skills. JOB DETAILS

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Client Delivery & Advisory

  • Lead and support the development of high-quality client deliverables, including briefings, analytical reports, presentations, and advocacy materials, under the guidance of senior consultants
  • Monitor and analyse regulatory, policy, and market developments relevant to client priorities
  • Develop project approaches, strategies, and execution plans aligned with client objectives
  • Oversee and review the work of junior consultants to ensure accuracy, rigour, and quality
  • Plan and execute client events, missions, and advocacy campaigns
  • Engage with government, industry, and other stakeholders to gather insights and provide informed input for client work

Client & Project Management

  • Develop a strong understanding of client businesses, operating environments, and policy needs
  • Communicate directly with clients, providing timely updates, insights, and advisory support
  • Manage day-to-day project delivery,including work planning, scheduling, and coordination of project teams
  • Delegate tasks effectively and provide guidance to junior team members
  • Ensure deliverables meet quality standards, timelines, and client expectations
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, records, and filing systems
  • Support contracting and coordination with clients, suppliers, and external advisors

Business Development & Growth

  • Contribute to business development efforts by preparing proposals, presentations, and briefing notes
  • Support business development meetings through research, preparation, and follow-up
  • Demonstrate sectoral expertise in client engagements and business development pitches

Stakeholder Engagement & Networking

  • Grow and maintain professional relationships with government, industry, and civil-society stakeholders
  • Expand sector-specific networks in both the public and private sectors to support client and firm objectives

Team & Office Development

  • Support the professional development and capacity-building of junior consultants
  • Contribute to internal initiatives led by Directors to strengthen team capability and firm operations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Malaysian national with excellent proficiency in English and Bahasa Malaysia. Proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
  • Three (3) to seven (7) years of relevant work experience preferred in one of the following areas: government ministries or statutory boards, government affairs/relations, public affairs/relations and communications, legal, consulting, media/journalism, or think-tank/academia.
  • Background in one or more of the following sectors is an advantage:
  • Communications, multimedia, data, content, digitalization
  • Energy
  • Healthcare (pharmaceuticals, medical devices, insurance, nutrition)
  • Payments, FSI sector regulation
  • Sustainability (EPR and plastics, agriculture)
  • Knowledge and interest in political and economic issues and developments in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
  • Broad knowledge of functioning and protocol of the Malaysian Government.
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Pro-active, eager to develop existing knowledge and skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in cross-cultural setting sand in a team.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills. Exercises sound judgment.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, i.e. political science, international relations,business administration, economics, public policy, or law. An advanced degree is a value-add.
