Computer Operator duties and responsibilities
Computer Operators support the users of their employer's computer systems by working to improve and maintain important computer processes. Their responsibilities may vary depending on their employer's size and technical infrastructure but usually include the following duties:
- Identifying and correcting file and system errors
- Performing data processing operations according to a business production schedule
- Performing backup procedures to reduce the risk of data loss
- Maintaining computer equipment and inventory and organizing repairs as needed
- Collaborating with Programmers and Systems Analysts to coordinate testing environments and resolve system problems
- Maintaining and managing processing logs and run procedures manuals
- Answering questions and troubleshooting problems for users
- Notifying maintenance personnel of system malfunctions
- Monitoring and scheduling jobs
- Monitoring the running of nightly updates
- Manually submitting batch processing jobs
- Running application performance management scans
- Processing phone requests
- Cleaning printers and performing preventive maintenance
- Providing support during business continuity exercises
- Recruitment & Staffing: Sourcing, screening, interviewing, and hiring candidates to meet organizational needs.
- Onboarding & Orientation: Managing new hire paperwork, introducing company policies, and facilitating integration.
- Compensation & Benefits: Administering payroll, managing benefits programs (insurance, leave), and ensuring competitive compensation.
- Employee Relations: Managing relationships between staff and management, mediating conflicts, and addressing grievances.
- Performance Management: Developing performance evaluation systems, setting goals, and conducting performance reviews.
- Training & Development: Identifying training needs, arranging workshops, and supporting career development.
- Compliance & Policy Enforcement: Ensuring adherence to labour laws, updating policies, and managing workplace safety.
