Job Description

A newspaper for the local Malay community, Berita Harian was established on July 1, 1957. It presents news and issues from home, the region and the world, featuring a wide spectrum of topics from sports to politics and religion. Other highlights include Malay culture and tradition, arts and heritage, family, hobbies and leisure. Berita Harian also provides a platform for the Malay community to voice their views on issues that concern them. It is a paper that speaks with authority and understands the needs of the Malay community.

About the Role

The Community Executive will play a key role in strengthening Berita Harian's digital presence and relationship with its audiences by growing, managing, and engaging online communities across multiple digital touchpoints including social media, messaging groups, newsletters, and online forums.

This role supports Berita Harian's transformation into a more community-centred digital newsroom by deepening two-way engagement, facilitating audience insights, and driving meaningful interactions that can inform editorial direction and product development.

Beyond digital engagement, the role will also support the Audience & Growth team in planning and executing face-to-face community activities, events, or activations aimed at building loyalty, strengthening relationships with readers, and fostering a vibrant Malay/Muslim community around BH's journalism.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Community Engagement & Activation

  • Build, manage, and grow online communities across platforms (e.g., WhatsApp Channels, Telegram, Facebook Groups, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, newsletters).
  • Create and share regular content updates, aligned with BH editorial direction and digital priorities.
  • Facilitate conversations and discussions to strengthen community engagement and participation.
  • Implement engagement mechanisms such as polls, quizzes, sentiment checks, comment prompts, and feedback surveys.

2. Audience Insights & Data Collection

  • Monitor and analyse community sentiment, behaviour patterns, and content preferences.
  • Extract insights from digital engagements (polls, feedback forms, comments, reactions, trends) to provide actionable recommendations to the editorial and audience teams.
  • Track performance and provide weekly/monthly reports to internal stakeholders.

3. Content Support & Distribution

  • Support the editorial team in amplifying key stories, campaigns, and multimedia content across digital communities.
  • Identify trending topics, community interests, and potential story ideas for editors and journalists.
  • Collaborate with Newsroom Strategy team to align content distribution with audience priorities.

4. Offline Community Activation

  • Assist in planning and executing in-person engagement activities such as community dialogues, reader meet-ups, focus groups, youth-led initiatives, and outreach events.
  • Support guest management, logistics, RSVPs, and on-ground content creation (live coverage, social clips, audience interviews).

5. Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with Editorial, Audience & Growth, Marketing, Events, and Partnerships teams to support integrated community-building initiatives.
  • Act as a bridge between BH's newsroom and its audience, ensuring community needs and feedback are heard and actioned.

Key Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Communications, Media, Marketing, Journalism, Community Management, or relevant field.
  • 24 years experience in digital media, audience engagement, community management, or social media operations.
  • Strong understanding of online community behaviour, digital trends, and social engagement strategies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and/or Malay (proficiency in Malay preferred for engagement execution).
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple engagement channels
  • Data-driven mindset with experience using basic analytics tools (Meta Insights, TikTok Analytics, Google Forms, survey tools, etc.).
  • Experience working with or within editorial environments is an advantage.
  • A natural connector who enjoys interacting with people online and offline.
  • Growth-minded, curious, and comfortable experimenting with new engagement formats.
  • Resourceful, proactive, and able to work independently as well as in cross-functional teams.
  • Flexible to work evenings/weekends when required due to nature of news events

This is a full-time contract position till March 2027, with an option to extend till 2028.
