Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Chief Investment Officer (CIO) to lead the investment function of a private family office.
The CIO will be responsible for investment strategy, asset allocation, portfolio construction, risk management, investment governance, portfolio performance and execution across public and private markets. The role requires strong investment judgement, leadership capability and the ability to operate independently while working closely with the Principal and senior stakeholders.
The successful candidate should also have experience building, enhancing or materially improving investment processes, governance, systems or portfolio structures.
Key Responsibilities
Investment Strategy & Asset Allocation
- Develop and implement the overall investment strategy of the family office.
- Lead strategic and tactical asset allocation across public and private markets.
- Define portfolio objectives, expected returns, risk tolerance, liquidity requirements and concentration limits.
- Review market conditions and recommend appropriate portfolio positioning.
Portfolio Construction & Investment Oversight
- Lead portfolio construction, capital allocation, rebalancing and exit decisions.
- Evaluate investment opportunities across equities, fixed income, private equity, venture capital, private credit, real estate, structured products and other alternatives.
- Oversee due diligence of external managers, funds, direct investments and co-investments.
- Review existing holdings and recommend whether investments should be retained, increased, reduced, rebalanced or exited.
Risk Management & Governance
- Oversee market, liquidity, concentration, counterparty, leverage, currency and private-market risks.
- Establish and maintain appropriate investment governance, approval and escalation processes.
- Ensure investment decisions are properly documented and aligned with the family office's objectives.
- Apply scenario analysis and stress testing where appropriate.
Investment Function & Process Development
- Review and enhance the family office's investment processes, governance structure and operating model.
- Develop or improve investment guidelines, portfolio controls, due diligence processes and monitoring standards.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of the Investment Policy Statement, asset allocation framework and investment decision-making processes.
- Drive improvements to investment workflows, controls and operating efficiency.
Portfolio Performance, Data & Reporting
- Oversee consolidated portfolio reporting across banks, custodians, managers, entities and asset classes.
- Monitor portfolio performance, attribution, exposures, liquidity and commitments.
- Ensure appropriate performance measurement and benchmark methodologies are in place.
- Improve portfolio data quality, reconciliation and reporting infrastructure.
- Provide clear and decision-useful portfolio reports to the Principal and senior management.
Investment Execution
- Ensure approved investment strategies and decisions are implemented effectively.
- Coordinate with banks, brokers, custodians, fund managers and administrators.
- Oversee subscriptions, redemptions, capital calls, rebalancing and other investment activities.
- Monitor investments after deployment and respond appropriately to material changes or underperformance.
Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide clear and independent investment advice to the Principal and senior stakeholders.
- Present portfolio reviews, investment recommendations, risk updates and market views.
- Build and lead a lean investment team with clear accountability.
- Manage relationships with banks, custodians, fund managers, advisers, legal counsel, tax advisers and technology providers.
- Demonstrate sound judgement, integrity, discretion and confidentiality.
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of relevant investment experience in asset management, family office, sovereign wealth fund, pension, endowment, institutional investing or a comparable environment.
- Strong hands-on experience managing multi-asset portfolios across public and private markets.
- Experience in asset allocation, portfolio construction, investment selection, rebalancing and risk management.
- Demonstrated experience building, enhancing or materially improving an investment function, investment platform, governance process or portfolio structure.
- Experience working with portfolio data, performance measurement and investment reporting.
- Strong ability to assess investment opportunities and provide clear investment recommendations.
- Strong project management and implementation capability.
- Experience working directly with Principals, Investment Committees or senior stakeholders is advantageous.
Education & Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Accounting, Mathematics or a related discipline.
- CFA, CAIA, MBA or equivalent professional qualification is preferred.
Language Requirement
Proficiency in English and Mandarin is required, as the role involves regular communication and presentation of investment matters to Mandarin-speaking stakeholders and counterparties.
