Job Description

Position summary: The Business Intake & Conflicts Analyst (Regional) is responsible for overseeing the daily workflow and timely movement of all new business conflict requests with an emphasis on requests within the designated region. Designated region for this position comprised of Cooley's Europe and Asia offices. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:

  • Responsible for processing and clearing all forms throughout the BIC lifecycle, including conflicts analysis, resolution, intake review and compliance follow-ups within the designated region
  • Create conflicts reports after preparing search terms for related parties in a matter
  • Understand and interpret database results for firm partners, counsel, attorneys and professional staff.
  • Prepare concise, comprehensive descriptions of prospective client/matter conflicts landscape based on the rules of professional conduct for attorneys and other submitters
  • Understand the rules of professional conduct including jurisdictional differences
  • Interact regularly with partners - through email and telephone to investigate and discuss potential conflict issues and solutions in connection with a new client/matter form
  • Provide regular updates to responsible attorneys and other users
  • Provide local point of contact for any conflicts questions from attorneys, paralegals, PA's or secretaries, escalating to General Counsel's office when needed
  • Maintain form resolution, status notes and responses for each new client/new matter form
  • Request waivers for all new clients/new matters requiring consent and confirm that all conflicts have been resolved
  • Provide waiver-drafting services upon request and, in the future, whenever waivers are needed.
  • Inform and advise firm attorneys and counsel of any special circumstances surrounding complicated matters
  • Answer questions on firm engagement letters, directing for internal review when needed
  • Identify and send client-form terms for internal review
  • Draft and implement any necessary ethical screen memos
  • Stay consistently aware of current legal trends and information
  • Perform conflicts case law and legal ethics research
  • Provide conflicts training for attorneys, paralegals, PA's or secretaries, as needed
  • Analyze incoming lateral candidates, as requested
  • All other duties as assigned or required

Skills and experience:


Required:

  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications.
  • Available to work overtime, as required
  • 3+ years applicable experience which could include experience in a law firm, legal environment or conflicts department
  • Proficiency in IntApp Open, Conflicts and Wallbuilder or similar programs
  • Knowledge of American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct and California State Bar Association's Rules of Professional Conduct
  • An overall understanding of a corporate law practice

  • Bachelor's degree
