BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER - METALS RECYCLING & COMMODITIES TRADING
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly driven, commercially astute, and results-oriented Senior Business Development Manager to spearhead business growth within our metals recycling and commodities trading operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing strategic supply channels, securing large-scale scrap metal contracts, expanding customer portfolios, and driving revenue and profitability growth. This role requires a proven hunter with an established network across manufacturing, construction, demolition, marine, oil & gas, utilities, infrastructure, logistics, and industrial sectors.
Candidates without a demonstrated track record of generating significant business revenue within industrial sectors will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Business Development
- Develop and execute aggressive growth strategies to increase market share and profitability.
- Identify, pursue, negotiate, and secure high-value scrap metal procurement contracts.
- Establish long-term partnerships with manufacturers, shipyards, engineering firms, construction companies, demolition contractors, industrial plants, data centres, and government-linked entities.
- Build a sustainable pipeline of business opportunities exceeding annual sales targets.
- Drive market penetration across local and regional markets.
Revenue & Profitability Management
- Deliver and exceed assigned sales revenue and gross profit targets.
- Ensure commercial negotiations achieve optimal pricing and margin performance.
- Develop profitable trading opportunities for ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
- Manage contract negotiations from initial engagement through execution and renewal.
Market Intelligence & Industry Leadership
- Monitor global and regional metal commodity markets, pricing trends, and competitive activities.
- Identify emerging market opportunities and industry developments.
- Provide strategic recommendations to management regarding market expansion, acquisitions, and partnership opportunities.
Customer & Supplier Acquisition
- Develop new supplier networks to increase scrap procurement volumes.
- Expand customer portfolios for processed and recyclable metals.
- Maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and decision-makers.
- Conduct regular customer visits and business reviews.
Tender & Contract Management
- Lead preparation and submission of tenders, proposals, and commercial bids.
- Negotiate and secure long-term supply agreements and framework contracts.
- Manage contractual risks and ensure commercial compliance.
Internal Collaboration
- Work closely with Operations, Procurement, Logistics, Finance, and Senior Management teams to ensure successful execution of contracts.
- Provide accurate sales forecasts and business development reports.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The successful candidate will be accountable for:
- Annual revenue growth.
- Gross profit contribution.
- New contract value secured.
- Scrap metal tonnage acquired.
- New customer acquisition.
- New supplier acquisition.
- Market expansion achievements.
- Contract renewal rates.
- Pipeline value generated.
- Customer retention and satisfaction.
Failure to achieve agreed commercial targets may result in performance review and corrective action.
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance, or related discipline.
- MBA or relevant professional qualifications will be advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum 8-10 years of business development, sales, or commercial management experience.
- At least 5 years within metals recycling, scrap trading, steel manufacturing, commodities trading, waste management, industrial services, or related sectors.
- Proven track record in securing contracts valued at SGD 500,000 and above.
- Demonstrated success in achieving and exceeding revenue targets.
- Existing network within industrial and manufacturing sectors is highly preferred.
Technical Knowledge
Strong understanding of:
- Ferrous and non-ferrous metals markets.
- Scrap metal grading and specifications.
- Commodity trading practices.
- Industrial procurement processes.
- Supply chain and logistics operations.
- Commercial contract management.
- Environmental and recycling regulations.
