About the Role

As a business correspondent or senior business correspondent with The Straits Times business desk, you will develop, report, write and produce content on a wide range of topics - from finance to economy, jobs and companies - to help audience understand how these issues relate to their daily lives and the wider global business community.

We are looking for two candidates with different editorial focus to cover the following

  1. Manpower matters, such as employment trends and workplace matters as well as labour policy and statistics
  2. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) corporate affairs, which range from expansion to insolvency and regulatory issues and new growth areas that may impact Singapore firms.

You are required to present your articles in an organised and interesting way to engage and inform our readers. In addition to cultivating strong contacts and networks, you need to be able to spot, analyse and investigate trends and tip-offs for exclusive stories.

You will be required to interview newsmakers, attend press conferences and cover major events to produce content appearing in print and online. Your work may additionally take the form of digital formats such as videos, interactive graphics, podcasts and other visual storytelling versions to be published on ST's various platforms.

You will also have an opportunity to contribute to Headstart, a young audience initiative by ST which engages the youth through newsletters, social media videos and events as well as Invest, which focuses on how people can better manage their money.

Job Requirements

  • Degree from a recognised university with at least 5-8 years of relevant experience in journalism and/or content creation
  • Excellent command of English and strong writing skills. Conversational fluency in a mother tongue or second language is a plus
  • Background or an interest in manpower and labour matters, SMEs, work of business groups/associations and the enterprise landscape in Singapore.
  • Some knowledge of Singapore's labour law, CPF, economics, business regulations and legal processes (e.g. corporate lawsuits, arbitration) will be an advantage.
  • Ability to conduct interviews and seek out relevant newsmakers, including people on the ground.
  • Ability to contribute news analyses, commentaries or in-depth features on hot-button issues
  • Enthusiasm, independence, resourcefulness and the ability to work under pressure
  • Strong news sense with a good understanding of what the audience needs and wants to know about
  • Adaptable and able to work both independently as well as in a team
  • Willingness to be rostered on weekends and/or public holiday
