Job Description

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Build Engineer / Linux Administrator with strong VMware expertise to support environment build and infrastructure operations. This role involves administering, maintaining, and optimizing Unix/Linux systems, as well as managing virtualized environments within an enterprise setting.

The successful candidate will have strong technical capabilities, be able to work independently on complex tasks, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and administer Unix/Linux servers (primarily RHEL) across production and non-production environments
  • Manage and support VMware vSphere infrastructure, including ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, clusters, resource pools, and virtual networking
  • Perform system monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity planning for Unix/Linux and VMware platforms
  • Implement and maintain security hardening, patching, and compliance standards (e.g., CIS, STIG, internal controls)
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across hardware, OS, virtualization, networking, storage, and application-to-database connectivity
  • Manage file systems, storage allocations, disk partitioning, LVM configurations, volume expansions, and mount point restructuring
  • Automate operational tasks using scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl) or configuration management tools (Ansible preferred)
  • Maintain and enhance backup, snapshot, and disaster recovery strategies
  • Collaborate with application, database, and DevOps teams to support deployments, upgrades, and migrations
  • Prepare and maintain documentation, including architecture diagrams, configurations, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides
  • Participate in on-call rotation and provide after-hours support when required

Additional Responsibilities

  • Design and implement secure automation solutions
  • Maintain or set up monitoring tools, notifications, and analytics
  • Manage version control systems and configuration management tools
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of Red Hat Linux environments
  • Provide virtualization and containerization solutions using VMware and Red Hat OpenShift
  • Support and troubleshoot critical system issues
  • Coordinate with development teams and architects to support CI/CD pipelines
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in Unix/Linux system administration
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter)
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, NFS)
  • Experience with storage systems (SAN/NAS) and backup solutions
  • Familiarity with ITIL practices and change management processes

Preferred Skills & Certifications

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent certification
  • Linux certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE)
  • Experience with container platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, OpenShift)
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure)

Technical Skills

  • Experience with automation tools such as Ansible
  • Knowledge of scripting (e.g., Shell, Python)
  • Experience with OpenShift for container orchestration
  • Familiarity with VMware infrastructure and integration with physical and cloud environments

Additional Technical Exposure (Advantageous)

  • Experience in software development or full-stack environments
  • Familiarity with programming languages/frameworks such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java, Python, Node.js, Angular
  • Knowledge of databases (e.g., MySQL, MongoDB), web servers (e.g., Apache), and UI/UX concepts

  • Good communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Detail-oriented with a proactive approach
