About the Role
You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team building modern backend services that support large-scale digital platforms used across the public sector. Working within an Agile environment, you will design, develop and maintain secure, scalable backend systems, APIs and integration services that power mission-critical business operations.
This role is suited to engineers who enjoy solving complex backend engineering challenges across distributed systems, cloud infrastructure and data processing while collaborating closely with frontend engineers, platform teams and business stakeholders.
What You Will Be Working On
- Design, develop and maintain secure, scalable and high-performance backend services, APIs and integration components.
- Design and implement microservices and distributed system architectures.
- Develop RESTful APIs and backend services that integrate with internal and external systems.
- Integrate applications with upstream and downstream systems, devices and data sources.
- Design, manage and optimise relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimisation and data integrity.
- Develop data processing, transformation and analytics services that support business workflows.
- Implement application monitoring, logging and observability capabilities to improve system reliability and operational support.
- Troubleshoot application, integration and production issues to ensure high availability and performance.
- Implement authentication, authorisation and backend security controls following secure coding best practices.
- Support testing, deployment, production operations and ongoing application maintenance.
- Produce clean, maintainable, well-tested and well-documented code while participating in peer code reviews.
- Maintain technical documentation, API specifications and solution design artefacts.
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups and retrospectives.
- Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, architects, DevOps engineers and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality technical solutions.
What We're Looking For
- Experience developing backend software for enterprise-grade applications.
- Strong programming proficiency in at least one of the following:
- Python
- Node.js
- Java
- Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs, backend services and microservice architectures.
- Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases, including data modelling, query optimisation and performance tuning.
- Experience working with message queues, event-driven architectures and enterprise system integration.
- Good understanding of software design patterns, backend architecture and secure coding principles.
- Experience developing and deploying cloud-native applications on AWS.
- Familiarity with containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with Git, GitLab, CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices.
- Experience working in Agile software development environments.
- Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
