Purpose
- The Associate/ Senior Associate, Civil & Structural (P5) provides senior technical leadership and professional expertise across high‑complexity, high‑impact projects and programmes, while contributing to the development of discipline practice, people capability and business objectives. The role is recognised as a senior technical go‑to resource, combining engineering excellence with strong judgement, autonomy and business awareness.
- Operating with significant independence and broad responsibility, the role makes decisions on complex to highly complex technical and delivery matters, advises senior management, and translates business and technical needs into effective project and practice outcomes. In line with JAF P5 expectations, the role influences outcomes beyond individual projects, mentors engineers at all levels, and supports the growth, quality and reputation of the Civil & Structural discipline.
Key Responsibility Areas
Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership & Design Delivery
- Act as a senior technical specialist support in various stages of project, including conceptual design, design development, contract documentation, authority submissions, contract administration, site meetings, etc
- Review schematic design, layout, calculations, technical reports and specifications, etc
- Supervise and review the work of Engineers, Designers and/or Drafters in the project team
- Discuss and propose solutions to technical issues and improvement on design standards
- Implement, control, and improve the quality of service produced in his division
- Enforce and implement all operating procedures, work instructions and quality requirements in the division.
- Lead or oversee high‑risk, high‑impact assignments, defining appropriate engineering approaches, methodologies and technical standards
- Apply deep structural expertise and broad industry knowledge to develop pragmatic, safe and innovative engineering solutions
- Design Governance & Quality Assurance
- Provide technical governance and oversight across multiple projects, including review and endorsement of critical calculations, reports, drawings and specifications
- Ensure consistent, high‑quality application of codes, standards, authority requirements and WSP practices
- Resolve or advise on novel, out‑of‑policy or precedent‑setting technical issues, escalating where required
- Strategic Project & Business Contribution
- Act as Project Director / Project Manager / Technical Lead on selected complex or strategically important projects
- Advise senior leadership on technical risk, delivery strategy, resourcing and capability matters
- Translate complex business, client and technical requirements into clear objectives, plans, scopes and long‑term delivery strategies
- Contribute to discipline, regional or business planning initiatives where technical leadership is required
- Stakeholder & Client Advisory
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients, authorities and internal senior stakeholders
- Lead complex technical discussions, negotiations and decision‑making forums with external and internal parties
- Represent the Civil & Structural discipline in high‑level reviews, audits and strategic engagements
- Leadership, Mentoring & People Development
- Guide and mentor engineers at all levels, including Principal Engineers, Senior Engineers and early‑career staff
- Act as an internal consultant and technical mentor, supporting capability uplift across teams
- Provide input into performance discussions, development planning and corrective actions, as required
- Support Division and Business Line leadership in people development and succession planning
- Innovation, Practice Development & Knowledge Leadership
- Identify and drive innovation in engineering methods, tools, processes and service offerings
- Introduce specialised technical or analytical concepts to develop improved engineering and business solutions
- Build and leverage professional networks across WSP to integrate expertise and resources
- Contribute thought leadership to internal forums, centres of excellence and industry platforms

- Provide visible leadership for SHEQ, safety‑by‑design and construction risk management
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality and regulatory requirements across projects under influence

Requirements
- Recognised Degree in Civil Engineering / Structural Engineering or equivalent; postgraduate qualification is advantageous
- More than 9 years of professional experience
- Extensive experience delivering and overseeing complex, high‑risk civil and structural engineering projects, including projects with significant regulatory, environmental, construction and interface considerations
- Good exposure in the analysis and design of geotechnical works, concrete structures, steel structures, civil works, or soil-structure interactions
- Good knowledge of the various engineering design software and analytical tools
- Deep and applied knowledge of codes, standards, regulatory and authority processes, with proven experience navigating complex, novel or ambiguous approval and compliance scenarios
- Strong experience across the full project lifecycle, including feasibility studies, tender development, detailed design, construction management and project completion
- Proven ability to provide strategic technical advice to clients, project leaders and senior management, translating complex technical and operational requirements into practical, defensible solutions
- Recognised within the organisation as a senior technical go‑to resource, capable of independently resolving highly complex engineering issues and advising on matters with material impact on cost, programme, quality and risk
- Demonstrated experience guiding, mentoring and developing engineers at multiple levels, and contributing to capability uplift and succession planning within the discipline
- Professional registration (PE or equivalent) is normally expected
- Strong client, stakeholder and people‑leadership capability, with the credibility to operate confidently with clients, authorities, contractors and internal leadershipStrong communication, stakeholder engagement and mentoring skills, with the ability to translate complex technical matters into clear, practical guidance
