Job Description

About the role

  • As an Associate Principal Cells Engineer, you will be instrumental in bridging product requirements with battery technology development. This role combines technical expertise in battery systems with strategic collaboration across the product business unit (BU), test teams, and suppliers to deliver exceptional battery solutions for Dyson's products.
  • You will be responsible not only for driving testing and validation frameworks but also for working closely with internal stakeholders to deeply understand product requirements. Through collaboration with cross-functional teams such as hardware, software, and mechanical design, and with external suppliers, you will play a pivotal role in designing energy systems that meet Dyson's rigorous standards for performance, reliability, and safety.
  • This hands-on role offers the opportunity to contribute throughout the product lifecycle, from the early design phases to qualification and integration, ensuring the delivery of world-class batteries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Product Business Units to understand requirements and develop battery design and testing strategies.
  • Define optimal battery solutions and validation methods to achieve world-class performance, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Lead the execution of industry-standard battery verification and validation frameworks, including EVT (Engineering Validation Test), DVT (Design Validation Test), and PVT (Production Validation Test).
  • Work with hardware, software, and mechanical teams to support seamless battery integration into products.
  • Engage with battery suppliers and equipment vendors to establish protocols, resolve issues, and drive innovation.
  • Oversee battery lab development, safety compliance, and optimization of testing workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., IEC 62133, UL 1642) and Dyson's internal safety benchmarks.
  • Analyze test data, prepare technical reports for senior stakeholders, recommend improvements, and mentor junior engineers.

About you

The ideal candidate combines technical expertise, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of product development. You excel at collaborating with cross-functional teams and suppliers while driving innovation in battery systems to meet high performance and quality standards.

  • BEng, MSc, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline. Academic focus on battery technology, electrochemistry, or energy systems is highly desirable.
  • 8+ years of experience in battery design, testing, and validation, with knowledge of cell chemistry and system integration.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with suppliers for battery development and testing.
  • Expertise in setting up and managing battery test labs, including equipment commissioning and workflow optimization.
  • Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery chemistry, electrolyte behavior, failure modes, and safety standards.
  • Familiarity with industry certifications (e.g., IEC 62133, UL 1642) and battery qualification processes.
  • Experience using simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, SPICE) for modeling and data analysis.
  • Strong communication skills to provide clear insights and recommendations to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work with product teams to align battery technologies with business requirements.
  • Track record of leading complex technical projects within fast-paced environments.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency optimization for consumer electronics.
  • Background in thermal management and advanced materials characterization is advantageous.
