Job Description

The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) trains doctors who put patients at the centre of their exemplary care. The School, which offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes, is named after local philanthropist Tan Sri Dato Lee Kong Chian. Established in 2010 by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in partnership with Imperial College London, LKCMedicine aims to be a model for innovative medical education and a centre for transformative research. The School's primary clinical partner is the National Healthcare Group, a leader in public healthcare recognised for the quality of its medical expertise, facilities and teaching. The School is transitioning to an NTU medical school ahead of the 2028 successful conclusion of the NTU-Imperial partnership to set up a Joint Medical School. In August 2024, we welcomed our first intake of the NTU MBBS programme, that has been recently enhanced to include themes like precision medicine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, with an expanded scope in the medical humanities. Graduates from the five-year undergraduate medical degree programme will have a strong understanding of the scientific basis of medicine, with an emphasis on technology, data science and the humanities.

The jobholder will support the Health and Safety (H&S) team lead in LKCMedicine and enhance H&S culture within the School. He/she will influence stakeholders such as the H&S committee and safety reps in LKCMedicine to achieve objectives for the team. The jobholder will be based at Experimental Medicine Building (EMB) and is expected to commute to Novena campus on a regular basis.

Responsibilities:

Contribute to safety culture within LKCMedicine

  • Support the lead of H&S branch to implement safety programmes to improve staff and students knowledge of safety and to monitor the effectiveness of such initiatives

  • Conduct safety briefings, e.g. for new staff, students on scholarly research projects

  • Organise quarterly safety representatives meeting to disseminate key H&S information, solicit ground inputs and discuss issues related to safety

  • Provide secretariat support for LKCMedicine Health & Safety committee which will discuss and deliberate on matters related to SOPs, safety practices

Drive implementation of the Safety Management System and maintain documentation of implementation

  • Conduct periodic safety inspections and audits and maintain documentations and records

  • Investigate reported incidents and accidents, identify root causes and develop mitigation plans to avoid future occurrences for laboratory groups

  • Track and monitor follow up actions on all reported incidents and accidents concerning breach of safety.

  • Develop emergency response plan with the lead of H&S branch and organise drills for emergency scenarios such as fire and chemical spills

  • Maintain records of risk assessments, training, legal documentation and processes as per the legal requirements and as required by NTU Office of Health & Safety

Contribute to fulfilment of regulatory requirements related to H&S matters

  • Work with NTU Office of Health & Safety for the audits of laboratories & workplaces and implement corrective measures to close the gaps

  • Conduct monthly inspections and annual internal SMS audits, workplace health & safety, biological safety and regulatory audits for permit applications

  • Maintain records of observations and track & document status of follow up actions

  • Plan and conduct emergency drills for stakeholders

Provide strong administrative support

  • Ensure that the chemical/ biological inventory and MSDS for all the chemical/biological compounds are updated and maintained by the labs.

  • Prepare, compile, track and monitor department budget and expenditure

  • Ensure that necessary supplies and services funded from the H&S budget are procured in a timely manner.

  • Manage inventories of emergency supplies for the School

  • Administer LKCMedicine Safety Awards and organise appreciation events

  • Serve as key liaison person for staff at EMB for all H&S related matters and support CSB, if necessary

Requirements:

  • Tertiary education qualifications with at least 3 years of research or safety management experience in a biomedical laboratory

  • Knowledge of local safety regulations and guidelines relevant to typical research and laboratory activities in a medical school

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels

  • Strong interpersonal skills to build influence and communicate effectively across diverse groups

  • Leadership skills to lead teams and manage projects effectively, providing direction, feedback and support when needed

  • Keen ability to grasp issues, identify root causes, propose and implement effective mitigation controls

  • Ability to build good rapport with internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and within tight deadlines

  • Meticulous and detail-oriented
