Your new role
Reporting to the Head of Underwriting, this position, either Assistant Manager or Senior Manager depending on experience, supports the underwriting function by evaluating, selecting, and pricing commercial insurance risks within delegated authority. The role contributes to the profitable growth of the commercial lines portfolio by applying sound underwriting judgment, maintaining strong broker relationships, and ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and regulatory standards. This role also assists the underwriting manager with portfolio monitoring, mentoring junior staff, and supporting underwriting initiatives across the Singapore office.
Underwriting & Risk Evaluation:
- Review and underwrite commercial insurance submissions in accordance with company underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.
- Analyse risk exposures, financial information, claims history, and survey reports to assess risk acceptability.
- Determine appropriate pricing, coverage structures, terms, and conditions for commercial risks.
- Prepare underwriting referrals where risks exceed individual authority limits.
Portfolio & Performance Management:
- Monitor portfolio performance including premium growth, loss ratios, and retention.
- Contribute to portfolio reviews and underwriting strategy discussions.
- Identify emerging risk trends and recommend underwriting actions where required.
Broker & Distribution Management:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and intermediaries.
- Respond to broker enquiries and provide technical underwriting guidance.
- Support business development initiatives to expand the commercial lines portfolio.
Compliance & Governance:
- Ensure underwriting activities comply with internal guidelines, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and underwriting records.
- Participate in internal audits, risk reviews, and compliance activities as required.
Team Support & Leadership:
- Provide guidance and mentoring to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
- Assist in training initiatives and knowledge sharing within the underwriting team. Support the underwriting manager in operational and strategic initiatives.
What you'll need to succeed
- Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Finance, Business, Risk Management, or a related field.
- Professional Certifications (Preferred)
- ACII (Chartered Insurance Institute) or equivalent professional insurance qualification.
- Typically, 4-8 years of commercial underwriting experience in the insurance industry.
- Experience underwriting commercial property, casualty, or speciality risks.
- Experience working with broker distribution channels in Singapore or the Asia-Pacific market.
- Strong analytical and risk evaluation capabilities
- Solid understanding of commercial insurance products and policy structures
- Strong negotiation and relationship management skills
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities
- Ability to exercise sound underwriting judgement within authority limits
