Job Description

Welligence Energy Analytics is a leading provider of upstream oil and gas intelligence, trusted by operators, governments and investors worldwide. We combine deep industry expertise with advanced analytics to deliver decision-ready insights that shape strategies and enable a lower-carbon future.

About the role

This full-time role delivers authoritative intelligence on Malaysia's upstream oil and gas sector as the primary focus, with coverage extending to other countries across the Asia Pacific region, directly supporting strategic planning, investment decisions and decarbonisation pathways for the region's industry players.

As a Senior Analyst you are a strong individual contributor who owns coverage of assigned countries end-to-end: building models from primary sources, publishing reports and intelligence notes, handling client queries and setting a standard of best practice that more junior analysts can observe and follow. You will work alongside geoscience, petroleum engineering, petroleum economics and market analysis specialists.

Key responsibilities

Upstream analysis and fiscal modelling

  • Evaluate exploration, development, production, reserves, costs and fiscal terms for assigned countries, with working knowledge of the broader region.
  • Own the accuracy and currency of asset write-ups, key issues and analysis for assigned countries, ensuring they are error-free and fully up to date.
  • Build or adapt fiscal regime models drawing on primary-source documents such as legislation and decree text.
  • Run sensitivity analysis on key valuation inputs such as oil price, discount rate, decline curves and capex timing, and explain which variables move the needle for a given asset.
  • Identify when a fiscal change, such as a tax rate, local content rule or windfall levy, materially affects asset economics, and flag it to the team.

Market intelligence and content

  • Track licensing rounds, M&A, exploration and development, policy change and corporate activity in assigned countries, and explain how global themes such as energy transition, NOC strategy and deepwater economics apply to that coverage.
  • Identify emerging trends in assigned countries and coordinate with the Head of Region to turn them into analysis.
  • Write intelligence notes on breaking events such as M&A within 48 hours, plus quarterly and ad-hoc write-ups a client could forward to their management.
  • Lead short-form and LinkedIn content for assigned countries end-to-end, and propose thematic content ideas that go beyond assigned countries.

Client and commercial engagement

  • Lead client query responses for assigned countries end-to-end: assemble the analysis, draft and send with senior sign-off, resolving most queries without escalation.
  • Conduct technical conversations with clients on platform data, methodology and coverage, handling follow-up questions with minimal support.
  • Build recurring client touchpoints in assigned countries through quarterly calls, research-trip meetings and check-ins.
  • Write content that supports sales, such as one-pagers, competitive comparisons and country briefings, and articulate Welligence's advantage versus competitors for assigned coverage.
  • Flag upsell signals in client questions and material updates that should be shared proactively with specific clients.

Research and data quality

  • Know and monitor every primary data source for assigned countries, and take the initiative to fill gaps by contacting regulators, submitting information requests and pursuing data-sharing where possible.
  • Lead regulator engagement and conduct regular E&P outreach for assigned countries, exploring non-obvious sources such as academia, consultants, competent person's reports (CPRs) and annual filings.
  • QA-check another analyst's output each cycle and catch errors before publication, and document update procedures so a backup analyst could run them.
  • Work with the data engineering team to fix recurring data quality issues and build validation checks.

What you bring

  • Experience: typically a minimum of eight years experience in research, consulting or operational roles in upstream oil and gas, with solid Malaysian and wider APAC upstream exposure.
  • Education: a degree in geoscience, geology, petroleum engineering or a related engineering discipline is an advantage, and an economics or business degree is equally welcome. At this level, relevant work experience carries more weight than academic background.
  • Technical skills: strong fiscal and economic modelling in Excel, including building and adapting fiscal regime models from primary-source documents and running valuation sensitivities. Good command of upstream datasets, reserves classification and production forecasting.
  • Industry knowledge: solid understanding of the oil and gas value chain, fiscal regimes, competitive dynamics and energy transition impacts.
  • Communication: translates technical analysis into clear, client-ready reports and notes, with strong communication across the research, data and commercial teams.
  • Initiative and ownership: plans own workload independently across updates, research, client queries and ad-hoc requests, keeping management informed, and delivers core requirements while progressing stretch goals.
  • Mindset and languages: analytical curiosity, attention to detail and evidence-based challenge. English fluency required; additional Asian language skills advantageous.

What's in it for you

  • Impact: ownership of country coverage that directly informs capital allocation and investment decisions for APAC oil and gas players.
  • Development: immediate responsibility in a key growth region for Welligence, with potential for associated career growth.
  • Reputation and skills: join a company recognised for integrity, depth and accuracy, working at the intersection of upstream expertise and advanced analytics.
  • Package and culture: a competitive salary and benefits package, and a distinctive, entrepreneurial company culture. Welligence offers a competitive compensation package, including a fixed base salary and performance-based bonus, reflecting the seniority and impact of the role. The successful candidate will also participate in the company's stock option scheme, providing meaningful equity participation in Welligence's continued growth, along with access to company benefits.

Additional details

  • Location: Singapore, preferably authorised to work in Singapore. Immediate start preferred.
  • Travel: regular regional travel, on average around once every two months, to engage government officials, national and international E&P companies and other industry contacts across Asia Pacific.
