We are seeking an accomplished and strategically minded APACHead of Construction Underwriting to lead the construction portfolio for our client across the Asia region. Based in Singapore, this leadership role carries full responsibility for underwriting performance, P&L management, and strategic development of a multi-country Construction portfolio. As the regional leader, you will set underwriting direction, drive profitable growth, and ensure the construction portfolio remains competitive, disciplined, and aligned with corporate objectives. You will oversee underwriting standards, guide market engagement, and partner with executive leadership to shape long-term regional strategies in a dynamic and expanding market.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic & P&L Leadership
- Own P&L performance for the regional Construction portfolio, ensuring sustainable profitability and balanced growth.
- Develop and execute regional underwriting strategies, risk appetite frameworks, and pricing philosophies.
- Lead annual business planning, budgeting, and performance forecasting for the construction line of business.
Portfolio & Underwriting Management
- Oversee underwriting of complex and major construction risks, ensuring compliance with corporate governance, delegated authorities, and global underwriting standards.
- Shape portfolio mix and balance, including capacity deployment, aggregation control, and capital utilization.
- Monitor market conditions and emerging risks to refine underwriting strategy and product offerings.
Market & Distribution Management
- Strengthen and expand relationships with key brokers, clients, and distribution partners across Asia.
- Represent the construction business at regional market events, industry associations, and strategic broker meetings.
- Support growth in priority markets through targeted market development initiatives.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a regional team of underwriters, fostering technical excellence and strong underwriting discipline.
- Drive capability building to support long-term organizational growth.
- Promote a collaborative, high-performance culture across multiple markets
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Claims, Actuarial, Reinsurance, Legal, and Risk functions to refine product structures, wordings, and risk selection.
- Collaborate on product innovation and development of new solutions in response to market trends, and evolving construction methodologies.
- Ensure robust governance, regulatory compliance, and effective use of reinsurance arrangements.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in insurance, engineering, finance, or a related field.
- 15+ years of underwriting experience, with substantial exposure to construction and engineering risks and leadership experience.
- Deep expertise in underwriting major infrastructure, civil engineering, and complex construction projects across Asia.
- Demonstrated ability to manage P&L responsibilities, drive portfolio performance, and lead strategic initiatives.
- Exceptional negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Proven track record building and leading multicultural teams in a matrix or regional environment.
