Chief Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, Asia Pacific

The Asia Pacific Chief (APAC) Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer is part of the Global Law and Compliance department. The APAC Chief Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer is responsible for leading our APAC-based team of lawyers and compliance professionals and reports into the Global Chief Compliance Officer and Global Chief Counsel, Aon Businesses.

Within APAC, the role will work closely with the APAC Executive team and business leaders to provide vital strategic advice and support, helping to anticipate, identify and manage business and legal challenges, and help the business accomplish its strategic and financial goals.

The role will support all Aon's businesses across APAC, spanning Human Capital and Risk Capital (Commercial Risk, Wealth, Health, Talent, Reinsurance and Data & Analytics Solutions). You will play a vital strategic, leadership role and therefore expect the individual to be able to lead, advise as well as work closely with all stakeholders to effectively collaborate as one team including with global and regional counterparts and other subject matter and jurisdictional experts. You will be expected to be an active leader, via collaboration across the first and second line of defense, supporting and advising on growth and innovation whilst simultaneously driving compliance and risk management, enabling sustainable growth for Aon.

The role is a key member of the APAC Executive Leadership Team and the Law and Compliance Executive Committee, collaborating closely with the Global Chief Compliance Officer, Global Chief Counsel, Aon Businesses, following the global operating model and strategy of Law and Compliance, working with other regional and global law and compliance leaders.

What The Day Will Look Like

  • Executive Management
  • Law & Compliance Strategy
  • Lead and execute Aon's global commercial law and compliance strategies in the APAC region, aligned with business priorities and risk appetite.
  • The provision of quality commercial legal and compliance support and risk management guidance to our growing mix of businesses within APAC, ensuring compliance with all applicable corporate policies, standards and procedures in accordance with local laws and regulations.
  • Advice and Guidance
    • Serve as a most senior legal and compliance adviser to APAC business leadership on commercial strategy, innovation, sales execution, and new product development, ensuring legal and regulatory risk is managed in line with Aon's risk appetite, within Aon's enterprise risk management framework
    • Build deep understanding of APAC businesses and growth priorities to deliver pragmatic, commercially aligned legal and compliance advice that enables speed to market while protecting the firm.
    • Work closely with business leaders and Law & Compliance colleagues to leverage insights from incidents, risk assessments, and regulatory engagement to strengthen controls and improve operational resilience.
    • Maintain, evolve, and continuously improve the APAC Law and Compliance operating model in line with the global operating model for the delivery of commercial legal and compliance support across the APAC region, ensuring alignment with global Law & Compliance overall strategy and Aon United principles.
    • Ensure legal and compliance resources across APAC are deployed in an agile, efficient, and scalable manner, balancing regional consistency with local regulatory requirements.
    • Drive standardization and consistency in compliance, contracting, legal risk positions, and business advisory approaches across APAC solution lines.
    • Partner closely with Legal Operations, ABS, including Global Capability Centers to optimize use of technology, data, automation, and alternative delivery models in commercial law and regulatory compliance support.
    • Lead regional implementation of global initiatives (e.g., contracting simplification, playbooks, templates, AIenabled process improvement, risk mitigation, and policy development), ensuring adoption and measurable business impact across APAC.
    • Proactively identify and manage legal and compliance risks in collaboration with the business line and work with the business teams to assess and effectively manage the same utilizing the regional risk committee framework.
    • Where appropriate, liaise and manage outside counsel on various matters to ratify legal advice to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.
    • Advise on the use of AI in business-related initiatives, ensuring compliance with laws and ethical guidelines.
    • Anticipate regulatory trends and advise on their implications for Aon's growth strategy and businesses, innovation, and risk tolerances.
    • Collaborate across Aon to support functional initiatives and model Aon's core values.

  • Governance
    • Attend local entity Boards and relevant Country Executive and Risk Committees.
    • Serve as a trusted advisor to APAC leadership, Law and Compliance leadership supporting growth and risk management strategies.
    • Advise on regional corporate governance, including board and committee structures and decision-making authority.

  • APAC Executive Leadership Team
    • Active member of the APAC Executive Leadership Team.
    • Represent the Law and Compliance function within the APAC Executive Leadership Team and contribute to Regional legal strategy, to support global strategies within the Law and Compliance function.

  • Team Leadership and Development: Act in accordance with Aon Values to
    • Lead and develop the APAC Law & Compliance team, fostering engagement and career development aligned with the Law and Compliance function's operating model.
    • Foster a high-performance culture with a focus on continuous improvement and professional development
    • Build an AI-centric culture within the team, staying on top of emerging AI applications, adopting AI to automate routine tasks, boosting productivity and effectiveness of the team.
This successful individual must also demonstrate the following leadership qualities

  • Legally qualified to practice law in the Singapore and holds applicable practicing certificate and experience of compliance activities.
  • Specialist insurance qualifications are advantageous

Skills And Experience That Will Lead To Success

  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in a legal and compliance function leadership role in APAC within the financial services industry.
  • Deep understanding of the financial services industry and associated laws and regulations, as well as experience cross sectors (pensions, investment, insurance broking, banking, etc.).
  • Proven ability to lead and influence senior leadership and business teams effectively.
  • Must be comfortable challenging the status quo of the organization and senior colleagues.
  • Dynamic and proactive bringing energy and enthusiasm to legal and compliance subjects.
  • Excellent people engagement skills and experience of influencing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
  • Excellent oral/written communication, planning, project management, networking and influencing skills.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking capabilities, with a history of successfully managing compliance and conduct risks in a complex, commercial environment.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, relationship building and influencing skills at senior management level.
  • Confidence and credibility to advise and influence the organization's most senior management.
