Job Description

AML Compliance Specialist

Compensation: S$3,000-S$4,500/month (dependent on experience) + 13th-month bonus + up to 3 months variable bonus.

BullionStar is Singapore's leading precious metals dealer. We sell, buy back, store, and deliver physical gold, silver, and platinum to customers worldwide - from first-time buyers to institutional investors. We operate a full-service showroom in Singapore, a comprehensive e-commerce platform, and vault storage facilities across multiple jurisdictions.

We are independently owned, founder-led, and intentionally lean. There are no layers of corporate bureaucracy here. Decisions are made quickly, everyone is close to the customer, and every person in the business has a direct impact on what we deliver. We've built our reputation on trust, transparency, and doing things properly - not on marketing spend.

We're looking for people who are drawn to that kind of environment - people who want ownership, not job titles, and who find energy in building something rather than maintaining something.

Why This Role Exists

BullionStar operates in a regulated industry where trust is everything. Our customers entrust us with their wealth, and regulators entrust us to keep the financial system clean. AML compliance isn't a box-ticking exercise here - it's fundamental to our licence to operate and to the trust our customers place in us.

This role exists because we need someone who understands that compliance is a competitive advantage, not a cost centre. Someone who can keep us ahead of evolving regulations, protect the business from financial crime risk, and do it all without creating unnecessary friction for legitimate customers. The right person will see patterns others miss, question things that don't feel right, and have the confidence to act on their instincts.

What You'll Own

  • Think, Don't Just Process - You'll own the day-to-day execution of BullionStar's AML compliance framework. That means you're not just following procedures someone else wrote - you're constantly evaluating whether those procedures are actually catching what they need to catch, and improving them when they're not.

  • Monitor Transactions with Genuine Curiosity - You'll review alerts with real investigative instinct, not just a checklist. You'll look beyond the obvious flags and develop a feel for what doesn't sit right - unusual patterns, timing anomalies, behavioural shifts. When something needs reporting, you'll prepare clear, thorough Suspicious Transaction Reports and Cash Transaction Reports and submit them to the relevant authorities promptly and accurately.

  • Own the Full KYC and Due Diligence Process - You'll manage the full spectrum - standard CDD, Enhanced Due Diligence for higher-risk customers, and ongoing monitoring. You won't just collect documents you'll think critically about what they tell you. You'll work directly with customers to guide them through the process, making compliance feel professional and straightforward rather than adversarial. You'll approve or escalate cases based on your own judgement, and you'll stand behind those decisions.

  • Stay Ahead of Regulation - You'll keep the company's AML policies and procedures current - not by waiting for regulatory changes to land on your desk, but by proactively tracking developments in MAS regulations, FATF guidance, and industry best practices. When something changes, you'll assess the impact, recommend updates, and implement them. You'll ensure all regulatory filings are accurate and submitted on time.

  • Make Compliance Real Across the Organisation - You'll design and deliver training that actually sticks - engaging guidance that helps every team member understand their role in keeping BullionStar clean. You'll work closely with operations, customer service, and leadership to ensure compliance is woven into how the business runs, not bolted on afterwards.

  • Use Technology to Sharpen the Edge - You'll look for ways to use AI and technology to improve our compliance capability - smarter screening tools, better pattern detection, automated reporting workflows, more efficient document processing. You'll be hands-on with these tools, testing and integrating them into daily workflows rather than just advocating for them.

Who We're Looking For

We care far more about who you are than what's on your CV. The right person will have most or all of the following traits:

  • Intelligent and sharp. You think critically, spot inconsistencies others overlook, and connect dots across seemingly unrelated data points. You don't just process information - you interrogate it. When something doesn't add up, you dig deeper rather than moving on.

  • Common sense. You balance regulatory rigour with practical reality. You understand that compliance exists to protect the business and its customers, not to create obstacles for their own sake. You make sound judgement calls and stand behind them.

  • Entrepreneurial. You treat the compliance function as if it were your own business. You think about efficiency, effectiveness, and impact - not just ticking boxes. You proactively seek out risks rather than waiting for them to find you. We'd rather see someone who has taken real initiative in a previous role than someone who has simply followed established procedures in a large institution.

  • Curious and investigative. You have a natural instinct to question and investigate. You read beyond the surface of a transaction, a document, or a customer profile. You stay current with financial crime trends, typologies, and regulatory developments - not because you have to, but because it genuinely interests you.

  • Strong initiative. You don't wait to be told what to do. When you see a gap in a process, a risk that isn't being addressed, or an opportunity to improve how things are done, you act on it. You bring proposals, not just observations.

  • Enthusiastic. You care about getting this right. You take pride in a compliance operation that is genuinely effective, not just compliant on paper. A genuine interest in the precious metals industry and the unique AML challenges it presents is extremely desirable.

  • AI-forward. You see technology as a way to make compliance smarter and faster. You're willing to experiment with AI-driven screening, monitoring, and analysis tools and integrate them into daily workflows - not as a replacement for human judgement, but as a way to focus it where it matters most.

Formal qualifications and years of experience in a compliance department matter far less to us than the traits above. If you have the intelligence, the instinct, and the drive, you can succeed in this role regardless of your background.

What This Role Is Not

This is not a role where you mechanically process alerts and check boxes on a form. If your approach to compliance is follow the checklist and file the report, you'll struggle here. We need someone who thinks, questions, and applies genuine judgement to every case.

It's not a role buried in a large compliance department where your work disappears into a process. You'll have direct visibility, direct impact, and direct accountability. What you do matters, and everyone in the business will know it.
