About the Role:
Heraeus Electronics is seeking an AI Transformation Intern to support early-stage development of AI-driven capabilities in R&D.
The role focuses on prototyping how AI can accelerate materials innovation, particularly in areas such as polymer chemistry, formulations, and related domains with faster experimental validation.
This internship will adopt a security-first approach, leveraging internal AI tools and local environments to work with confidential R&D data.
Job Responsibilities:
- Identify and prototype one high-impact AI use case in materials innovation (e.g., formulation optimization or property prediction)
- Develop a working AI/ML prototype, potentially combining LLMs and data-driven models
- Evaluate and leverage internal Heraeus AI platforms for R&D applications
- Set up and experiment with local AI environments for secure data handling
- Collaborate with R&D teams to translate practical material challenges into AI-driven approaches
- Work independently to explore, test, and iterate solutions in an open-ended problem space
Expected Outcomes
- A functional AI prototype applied to a real materials problem
- A demonstrated AI-enabled workflow supporting R&D activities
- Assessment of internal vs local AI approaches (usability, security, scalability)
- Clear recommendations on practical next steps for AI adoption in innovation projects
Job Requirements:
- Preferred Undergraduate from Computer Science / Data Science
- Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fields are welcome to apply too
- Strong proficiency in Python programming
- Hands-on experience building AI/ML models or applications
- Familiarity with LLMs, APIs, or AI frameworks (e.g., OpenAI, Hugging Face, similar tools)
- Ability to develop prototypes independently with minimal technical guidance
- Experience with local AI models or environments (e.g., Ollama or similar tools)
- Exposure to data analysis, modeling, or scientific datasets
- Interest in applying AI to materials science or engineering problems
- Self-driven and comfortable working in ambiguous, exploratory environments
- Strong problem-solving skills with a hands-on, builder mindset
- Ability to connect technical tools with real-world applications
- Minimum 5-6 months internship commitment is preferred
Why Join:
